The first commandment.
You shall have no other gods before me.
This shows he believed in the existance of other gods but wanted to be considered number 1.
Can anybody tell me which gods they were?

Canaan was a crowded place, godwise. Bereshit (Genesis) has 'elohim' (gods, plural) all over the place. It was clearly written before monotheism was invented.

Even the Almighty acknowledged the existence of other beliefs. Of course, they were false gods, but because they were a terrible distraction from the one true God, laws were made to help ensure that the people would follow the one true God named Jehovah, or Yahweh.
In the old days, people believed in a myriad of Gods. Today, things are'nt that much different, with the many beliefs that prevail today. Remember Pharoah's worship to his God in the days of Moses? He tried to change the course of Moses with prayers and sacrifices to his god, but to no avail. Later Moses followers made a calf of gold to worship. Bad mistake again.
Believe it or not, Satan is considered the god of the system of things. When Jesus was tempted after his 40 days of fasting, Satan offered him the kingdoms of the world for just one act of worship to him. Jesus never denied his ownership of this man-made system, but did let him know that worship only belongs to the true God.

The people made for themselves a golden calve and worshiped it as their God . People then and now still make
idols and worship them as their god . Hello , people worship
money today and put that first before anything else in their sorry lifes . Really, this could go on for quite a long time ,
