well that depends on who you talk to but here are some things to consider:

1. no (or very little) cost compared to windows
2. practically virus/spyware free
3. lots of free software available (windows has some too but not the extent that linux has)
4. you have the source code, so (if you were so inclined) you could actually modify the OS
5. can run on less powerful systems than windows
6. lots of choices of version of linux
7. free compiles for almost any computer language you can think of
8. you can run (on the system)
web server
dns server
dhcp server
imap server
mail server
file server
print server
and lots of others but you get the idea

to do the same on windows requires (for some) additional purchases OR windows server

some of the downsides are:
1. there is windows ONLY software you cannot get for linux (YET) there are windows emulators for linux that are actually pretty good
2. while linux has a GUI that ALMOST rivals windows its not quite there (but its mighty close)
3. your family/friends probably know windows better than linux (so getting help from them would be easier with windows than linux) BUT there are tons of sites that help people with any linux issues
4. driver support for the latest hardware is behind windows (but once again getting close)

so it really all depends on what you want to do with the PC, if all you want to do is surf the internet, read email and maybe do some documents (openoffice is a free version like MS office) linux can do all that and a lot more, one HUGE advantage is the lack of spyware/viruses that will run on linux

There are a few reasons that UNIX and UNIX-like systems (like Linux) are more secure by design than Windows. First of all, many Windows users run administrator accounts, which do not require a password before a program is executed. If an admin executes a program that has a virus, the virus has complete control over the computer instantly, and without needing to get through anything. On a UNIX system, the user almost never uses the all-powerful "root" account, and if they do, they must put in a password to execute powerful programs. UNIX systems also have proper memory protection, which means that even if a virus is executed, it cannot under any circumstances (except if a security hole is found) modify the memory of another process. This is also the reason that UNIX systems won't break because a program does something bad, because that program is perfectly isolated. There is also the fact that fewer desktop users use UNIX and Linux etc., so fewer people write viruses for them. Neither Windows nor UNIX are perfect, but the general security design of Windows is worse.

A lot of people prefer Linux, I dont really know why as Windows is far more GUI based and Linux tends to rely on the users knowledge of commands and stuff. I have just done an exam using Linux and Windows and I can tell you I found the WIndows a lot easier to use.

Linux is also made so people can mess around with the code which is one thing Windows wont let you do so if you want to tweak linux u can, as long as you know what youre doing :)

I know many people prefer Linux, I just found it hard to work around.

it depends on what you mean by better... you will get a plethora of answers saying "YES" or "NO" but...

Windows has far more products available and is much easier to set up a network with... its what you pay for

Linux can be a right pain to start with, but if you master it then you could earn more money in a job scenario... Also, it is open-source and many of the things you have to pay for with windows can be downloaded free or linux...

Yes, it is WAY more stable than Windows is. But, it has a bit of a learning curve.

I myself have never used it, but they're not very good with running certain applications as many pieces of software are not compatible with it.
