I have a collection of parrots and I would like to know the best fly repellant I can use in the same room as them. Parrots have very economical respiritory systems and are very sensitive to fumes so I'm after something that won't interfere with their health. I was thinking that citronella candles would be good but I'd like to hear some feedback from any bird-keepers that can offer me some good advise before I use anything.

Scroll down to GENERAL PEST REMEDIES, start there and then keep going to the bottom of the page. Some very good advice from the owner of an aviary.

Citronella doesn't work, unfortunately. Birds are sensitive to the smoke from candles, and the fumes from this kind are REALLY strong.
I would purchase the fly traps that you put water in or the sticky fly paper that you hang. Of course, the birds would not have access to either.

I find a good old fasioned fly swatter works the best for me.
Good luck!

I wouldn't use anything like citronella or any sprays at all. What I use (and seems to help) is fly strips, hung well out of beak reach. They are just gummy sticky strips of paper and that trap any flying insect that lands on it. They come rolled up with their own tack. A couple of those strategically placed might be very helpful. Just don't forget they are there and bump your head into them. They trap hair too. ;)

I also use a good old fashioned fly swatter and when seed moths seem to explode on occasion, a vacuum cleaner with a hose to suck them right out of the air and the walls and ceiling. You can also get those fun battery-powered, tennis-racket shaped bug zappers and just take swings at them. LOL!
