this is free, legal and useful, but u need a windows CD to make it, which im guessing you don't have since you would then already have what you need to get recovery console.

You will need an XP disk to open the repair console. It does not have to be "your" disk, IE, you can use a friends XP disk in that you are not going to load the OS so the CD key won't be needed. Put the disk into your CD dirve and let Windows start to load. When you get to the screen that asks if you would like to attempt to repair this installation of Windows, choose yes. This will open the "Command Prompt" At the prompt, type "chkdsk /r" without the quotes, and notice that there is a space between the k and the foward slash. Let the repair console run until it completes. This could take some time. When it is done, remove the XP disk and restart your system.

if you don't have the original disk you will have to buy one.
