An MRI uses a magnetic field to detect hydrogen atoms in your body. Based on the number of hydrogen atoms and what kind of substance those hydrogen atoms make up (water, fat, muscle, etc.) the MRI assigns that area of your body a shade of color and forms 3D diagrams. This allows people to get an idea of what the different structures inside you body look like.

An MRI can go through very small sections of you body, but when making the 3D images there will be gaps in the pictures. Each 'slice' of an MRI has, at the smallest, at least a 3 to 7 mm gap based on the cost and age of the machine and software running it.

they're not comfortable, but they're the most accurate scans...

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), formerly referred to as magnetic resonance tomography (MRT) and, in scientific circles, nuclear magnetic resonance imaging (NMRI) or NMR zeugmatography imaging, is a non-invasive method used to render images of the inside of an object. It is primarily used in medical imaging to demonstrate pathological or other physiological alterations of living tissues. MRI also has uses outside of the medical field, such as detecting rock permeability to hydrocarbons and as a non-destructive testing method to characterize the quality of products such as produce and timber.

What the other guys haven't explained is that the MRI can do a scan of you millimeter by millimeter and it puts these scanned images on the computer for your doctor to review.
