not that wiccans aren't usually pagans (though some claim to be christian wiccans) but as a non wiccan pagan, i appreciate that people are becoming more knowledgable to the fact that not all pagans are wiccans

I wonder why Colson gets so many thumbs down. Maybe he is just being positive...

What's wrong with loving a tree? Without trees we'd all be dead.

But seriously, you're right. Although I'm not fully there yet. Even if I've learned a lot already about both religions, I still can't fully understand the differences between wiccans and pagans, sorry. Not your fault, it's mine. I'm lazy.

yes, I am very happy about this myself. Wicca I think paved the way for other Neopagan religions, because they were the first ones out there fighting for legal status as a religion. Now, there are several Neopagan organizations which are federally recognized as Churches. I'm seeing a lot of this on Answers -- those of us who are Pagan but not Wiccan are speaking up. Wicca is a fine path, just not the only one under the Pagan umbrella.

and I've always found the idea of "Christian Wicca" absurd -- it misses the point entirely of both Christianity and Wicca, but that is a rant for another time.

It's a long and slow process, I'm afraid - too much of the popular presentation of Paganism has it equated with Wicca, which leaves the rest of us in Wicca's shadow.

I can understand if the average non-Pagan doesn't know the difference. But I've met too many Pagans who don't know the difference either - or, at very least, not seem to understand that the difference means that we don't all believe in the same things that Wiccans do. And, frankly, unless they're a newbie, they should know better.

The word "pagan" is an umbrella term used to mean anyone believing in "more than one god". Please do not confuse the word "believe" with "worship". One can believe wholly in a god without choosing to worship that god.

Pagan, meaning "polytheist" is like referring to Christians as "monotheists"... which they are. The term pagan includes Wiccans, Shamans and many other "traditional pagan" sects. But it also includes Hindus and anyone worshipping the old Pantheons (Zues and his Crew, Osiris and his crew, Oden and his Crew, etc.)

So, Wiccans are ALWAYS pagan, though not every pagan is a wiccan. Wicca falls under this umbrella term because there is a place in traditional Wicca for both a male and female aspect of deity i.e. the God and the Goddess.

Techinically speaking, EVERY RELIGION outside of the main monotheistic ones (Christianity, Islam and Judaism) can be considered pagan.

Oh, and "christian wiccans" can either be monotheistic or polytheistic depending on their view of other gods. Christian wiccans are usually considered pagan, however, because there has to be a dillution and move away from more traditional Christianity for them to exist--and between Christianity and Wicca, Wicca is the only one that would allow the worship of a monotheistic god while still practicing the Craft.

I agree. :)
I honor Isis and Osiris and my magic isn't as earth based. My sister is Wiccan. There are a lot of similarities obviously but its nice that people are starting to see the differences.

I'm seeing it, too, and I'm *so* glad! I'm also reading mainstream media treatments of non-Wiccan Pagans, like Druids, lately. It's about dang time.

Oh, and I love trees! So pretty, and so useful for birds and squirrels, and they keep our air nice and clean!

Yes I think it's really good.

Sheesh why is Colson such a negative person?

Well that's good news! Keep it up!

We need more people to open up and see the Truth in life :-)

Anyway, what makes it all different is what matters in the heart, agree?
