Based on the known weaknesses and failures of all or most of the old testament patriarchs, prophets, and kings, as well as the new testament's Judas, Peter, and Paul, not to mention most of the other apostles, who were all chosen by God for their respective missions, why do people attempt to hold the Church, and in particular the Papacy, to standards that are noteably higher than God's?

Well, if someone says you should follow and obey them and live how they say, I think one has a right to scrutinize the asker.

Because --

1. The Papacy is an easy target for Catholic-bashers.
2. They don't understand the meaning of papal infallibility, and think we believe everything a Pope says or does is infallible.
3. They have an intense dislike for authority figures in any context, or
4. They believe everything their own "authority figure" (religious leader) tells them and don't bother to check it out on their own.

If Jesus can entrust Peter with the care of His sheep (John 21:15-17) after Peter cut off the ear of Malchus (John 18:10) and denied Him thrice, surely we can cut Peter's successors a little slack.

Christ founded His church on the faith declaration of Peter knowing full well the frailty of men and this is why He sent the Holy Spirit to keep the church from error and to help it stay faithful to Him.

Because if these people consider themselves leaders of the Church, then they need to uphold high standards. If they want to have their standards be slacking, they need to choose an alternate profession. It's bad publicity.

People are always quick to point out the failings of others. It helps them rationalize and justify their own failings. It also diverts attention away from themselves and puts themselves in a better light as the one who is trying to correct perceived injustices.

Christians are not perfect.

Humans are not perfect.

That is why God gave us the Sacraments. Redemption keeps us in the Grace of God even though we fail.
