What my personal trainer has me do is when doing regular sit ups, he has me do them on a medicine ball thing. (More like a big inflated bouncy ball.) Lie on that with the ball at mid-back. No need to go all the way up, but do small to medium crunches, slowly, and don't curl your chin into your chest, but rather try and point it toward the ceiling. Breathe out and you come up and breathe in as you do back down. Doing slow crunches and the proper breathing gets the best 'bang for your buck' for your ab work out.

You would breathe out when you come up. In general, you should always breathe out when you are contracting a muscle (performing the exertion).

Breathe Out.
It easier, more natural.
It allows the effort of using your abdominal muscles to sit up assist in breathing.
