The average estimates are about $1,000 to have it done. I was just wondering if it is something my husband and I could do ourselves(without killing ourselves!)

get the professionals in, trust me as a trade painter.

You could try to do it yourself with an epoxy paint or dedicated pool paint, but if you dont do it right from the beginning it will be a mess, a waste of time and money, and you will need to get people in to fix it at at least twice the price.

Technically you can paint anything yourself, it's quite easy. the trick is in knowing how to do it right first time, and particularly with pools, when to do it.

Also, if someone else does it and it goes bad they have to fix it right?

It can probably be done "DIY". May not be as good as a professional, but, weigh your options as to money. Talk with a Paint Store as to type of paint, how it mixed, and how you apply it. As mentioned above, you may need to use an Epoxy Based paint that require mixing in a hardener at the correct measurement. Also, you may need a special Paint Sprayer to obtain a nice finish. Learn as much as you can, see what you save and decide if you can be happy with the results.
As far as killing yourself, well, this not going to be as easy as washing a car, but, once you learn what all you need to do, it give you an idea how hard it will be.
