Generally, you need to be tested for parasites. Which method of testing depends on the parasite. Parasites can inhabit a variety of places in the human body.

The most common sites for parasitic infection are the skin and the gut.

Skin parasites usually cause itching. Symptoms of skin parasites include itching, rashes, lesions and hives. Sometimes, you can see the bugs on you.

Gut parasites can cause diarrhea, gas, bloating, sometimes vomiting. You can detect gut parasites by examining a stool specimen. Some of them (like Anisakis sp. worms) can only be detected by endoscopy (sticking a camera in your gut and looking around).

Then there are parasites that live in the liver, lungs, blood, brain, etc. Creepy. Some brain parasites are diagnosed via MRI and CT scan (cysticercosis cases, etc). Some parasites can be tested for using blood tests (lung flukes) or smears (trypanosomes).
