Jeep says 4X4 but no putton or shaft to push in to indicate it is in four will drive. It is always in four will drive

Grand Cherokee Laredo's are/were available in the 2006 model year with either 2WD or 4WD. Jeep is no longer offering the old standard SelecTrac, in which you could choose your mode of wheel drive manually. All available 4WD systems are now 'automatic', meaning that wheel slippage (loss of traction) is sensed by a computer which electrically engages the 4WD as needed.
The old SelecTrac system was quite reliable, and offered full driver control of drive modes. These new systems downright SUCK. My wife drives an '04 with SelecTrac, and has decided to look at other brands when it is time to replace her car because the SelecTrac was eliminated.

There are 2WD models available, but why buy a 2WD jeep?
The new jeeps are push button now, although there is one type of system offered by jeep that does not have low range or a neutral position (I forget the name of the system now) that doesn't require input from the driver but there isn't a 2WD mode available on that particular model so it would be in 4WD all the time.
I own a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the Quadra-trac transfer case which is also full time 4WD and has neutral and 4WD low range and I average 24-26MPG. With the 4.0L H.0. inline 6 engine.

Cherokees that are equiped with the "always in 4wd" will eventually end up with a broken axle joint or drive shaft, or other problems when taken off road. If it doesn't have the transfer shifter, I would not own one. I usually don't talk bad about Jeep vehicles, but that is one feature that I disagree on.
