It depends what kind of road bike you want. For a racer, you want as much money as you can get to get something worth while, but if you want some kind of touring bike (built for roads, with slick tyres as standard etc, but with a more upright riding position, like on a mountain bike) then £300 will get you a good bit of kit. They tend not to come with a shock fork, and have either cantilever or v brakes, so against a similarly priced moutain bike they will have better components all round.

A tourer is the route I would suggest for a commute as it will be more comfortable for riding to work, although I personally love riding to work on my mountain bike, with some semi-slick tyres for the road. You also look better riding that kind of bike in casual clothes, or work clothes, than you would on a racer!

If you buy a good bike that will develop your interest on biking (not just commuting to work, but as a cyclist).

Look for a Road Bike, not a mountain bike. Mountain Bike is made for "off the road" with wide tire and nodes. This will slow you down and will take more of your energy.

Road bikes are light weight, easy to paddle and smooth to ride and can speed up instantly in busy street road even.

Remember biking hobby will make you 10 years younger is just few months. Because it will bring you back is shape, you had 10 years before!

How about go to your local bike shop and get fitted? They can then recommend the best bike for your geometry that will fit your needs and budget. However, I recommend you save a little more first and buy something a bit more worthwhile.

You coudl always go get fitted and then check out local yardsales and want ads in the newspaper. Just make SURE your bike fits you!!!

If you walk into a shop with 400 pounds in hand, they'll set you up well. Save the extra 100 for the accesories - pump, repair kit, helmet, etc.

You only need to spend about 200 if its just for commuting mate, tend to prefer a mountain bike for commuting myself...and resist the lycra urge!!!!

Have a look in Halfords but dont go for the 70 quid cheapos.
