I teach year 1 and know from experience that this is a more common problem than you'd think. Possible reason 1: He could be so involved in his work/play.other activities that he doesn't realise that he needs the toilet until it's too late. Possible reason 2: Even if he is confident usually, some children get very embarrassed at having to publicly ask to use the toilet. I encourage my children to put their hand up and then I go over to them so they can ask me quietly without them having to shout their problem. Possible reason 3: He could have an anxiety issue - My husband still won't use use public toilets unless he really has to, but obviously has no problem using the toilet at home. Your son could have a similar problem for some reason - Try discussing it with him rather than just his teacher because sometimes things are happening that teachers aren't aware about. One of our girls was scared of the toilets because it had a mirror in and a year 6 had informed her that if you flush the toilet and look in the mirror the 'black lady' will get you. Possible reason 4: I suspect not but if none of the other reasons seem plausible, it may be worth taking him to the doctors to get him checked to ensure he doesn't have a medical condition. When he is at home he is able to instantly go to the toilet but doesn't have this luxury at school so if it is an issue with urgency that could be the difference. Suggestions: Ensure he uses the toilet every playtime/lunch time. I had a pupil who had a problem (although his was medical as his bladder didn't communiate to his brain that it was full so he had accidents). So that this child could discreetly ask to use the toilet, or I could remind him to go (which I did if he seemed engrossed in an activity) we used the sign language for toilet. (two fingers on your shoulder - google it and you will see). I think the best way to solve this is communication with your child's teacher and ask her/him to encourage your child (maybe along with the other children in the class) to consider whether they need the toilet. Maybe it would be a good idea for her/him to ask the children in between activities. Good luck! Edit: Sorry, I had to correct my spelling. I had a couple of terrible typos!

I have a couple of boys in my preschool that have had the same problem. Both times the parents took them in to the doctor to make sure they did not have UTI's. Neither of them did. If there is nothing wrong with his UT, just let him run out the phase. I just let the boys go to the bathroom when they felt like they needed to. It usually lasted no more then one week after they went to the doctor. I really don't know how it started but I knew that they weren't doing it for attention because of the times that they would go would not be at times where they would want to get out of a situation. Good luck

Well, my son is 6... and it wasn't every 10 minutes.. but definitely 3+ times every hour. His Dr. suggested I test him for diabetes (I don't see the link... but that's what they told me)... just a bug in the ear... it may be nothing

Good luck

It's good that he is going for testing. There are several medical causes ranging from urinary tract infections to diabetes. Best wishes~

It could be that he is doing it for attention, as he feels that he is in competition with someone, or something else.
