Turn yourself in, take the punishment, and discharge. Then you let the stigma follow you for the rest of your life.
The military will probably NOT put you in jail.
"Hire an atty"???? *LMAO* Yeah, that'll help.

After Bush came into office all AWOL soldiers are returned to there original unit when found. When I was in we had a guy that went AWOL in 1992 or 93 returned to us in 2003. We had lots of other soldiers who were AWOL get picked up by the police for traffic stops or ID checks, or one that even applied for a job as a police officer, returned to us. Your best bet is to either get a lawyer to work out a deal with the Army, there will be some jail time a month or two or he will be able to get you return to your unit or another one. Be very respective during this time and do not push your luck with the Army. He is in a deep enough hole he does not need to dig it deeper. Running you mouth to a superior could change status from AWOL to deserter, and there will be lots of jail time if that happens. If you do not want to be looking over your shoulder for the rest of your life just turn yourself in and deal with the choice you made. Around 2001 they arrested a deserter from Vietnam when he was on a flight from Canada to Mexico when it stopped in Arizona for a layover. The government never forgets.

Turn yourself in now. AWOL is only for 29 days day 30 you become a deserter and that is punishable by death during a time of war. Grow up and go back. You were never forced to enlist so suck it up and take whatever they give you for running away from the job you chose. If you want publish your address and we will help you out be calling the police. Did you hear about the two deserter Sailors they just arrested?? You won't last long out there, you will end up in jail quicker than you think. No sympathy from this active duty member!

If he is AWOL from the Army and he hasn't been gone for over 30 days, have him report to the nearest Army post and turn himself in. The worst punishment he'll get is non-judicial and he'll get his life back, but he will have to finish his contract with the Army and then he'll get an honorable discharge. If he is AWOL more than 30 days he's a deserter and yes he could be arrested, just have him turn himself in to the Army, have him be honorable.

The best way to stay out of jail is not to go on AWOL. The military is not a place for unpatroitic , cowardly people who easily give in to pressures when the going gets tough.

the best thing to do is turn your self in. come on is it worth running for the rest rest of your life? You made a commitment you or who ever was not drafted you signed a contract and as a good american you or who ever need to follow through. The fact is no matter how long you or he or who ever hides all it takes is one traffic stop one parking ticket a tax return to find you.or he or she.A job application unless you like living in the woods in which if you thinkthats your best alternative but thats probably not a wise move. Lets face it you signed a contract live up to it go turn yourself in. you wont be able to have a life outside a garbage dumpster if you dont. besides to go awol is irresponsible. You have a duty and you just cant say i dont feel like going back its just not going to work that way. go back and they wil let you out after some brig time but you wont hve to run. ps very ashamed of you.

This person in effect signed a contract that is legal and binding... Besides, it is this person's duty to serve if they signed up... Many servicemen have died fighting for the freedom that we now enjoy... How dare this indivdual dishonor their fellow soldiers!
The best thing that this person can do is to turn themselves in and face the music... Otherwise spend the rest of their lives living in disgrace and dishonor, looking over their shoulder... In this day and time it is very hard to hide... The advent of computer databases and the growing fact that many agencies now share information, makes it very simple to find someone... Just one traffic stop, an income tax return, or even, hate to think of it, internet submissions can do it...
Tell this person to grow up and be an adult... Turn themselves in and fulfill their obligation to their country...
There are many folks like myself that would like to serve our country but because of our age, i'm 43 now, we can't do so... I belong to Civil Air Patrol and am doing my part as a volunteer member of the Air Force Auxiliary...
I've found a way to make a difference and help in the war on terror... It's my personal opinion that the US should institute compulsory military service right out of high school for a minimum of two years... I think that many would choose to re-enlist when they find out that military service isn't a bad deal...
If at the end of two years, the young person decides that the military is not for them, then they may leave with no further obligations... This would have an effect on the services too... If they wish to retain personnel, they will have to make military service competative in pay and benifits to jobs in the private sector.
My son is only 13 and he is a Cadet in CAP and has risen to be his Squadron's 1st Sgt... He is learning and applying the tenents of Leadership and leads his squadron effectively... The Air Force Academy is all he thinks about... The military has consumed his life and I am 110% behind him... I will do what ever it takes to help him acheive his goal... He will be someone one day... I have no doubt!
If a 13 yearold can put his feet on the path to serving his country and not waver, so can your friend... Tell them to straighten up and fly right...

He is going to have to take his lumps. Everyone wants to get away with whatever they want but the fact is actions have consequences and in most cases ( this one included ) we know the consequences when we commit the action. The simple solution is to not do anything that you don't find to be worth the consequences but its a bit late for that now.
That being said I think he deserves jail. Welcome to Ft. Leavenworth Kansas . The sooner he accepts responsibility for his actions the sooner he can get on with his life.

before 30 days, turn yourself in and hope all you get is a few days inthe brig. After 30 days, it becomes desertion. while the militray won't necessarily come after you.. the minute tyou get pulled over for running a stop sign, you WILL be flagged, and the cops will arrest you and there you will sit until the military decides to come get ya.

After you go AWOL, give me your name and address. I'll be MORE than happy to send you instructions on how to stay out of jail. (sarcasm much emphasized here)
