Do you think that decision could cause other high dollar sponsors to be more careful in the future? I think Nextel paid a lot of money to get their name out there and should have more say in the matter.
Tell me what you think!

I am referring to NASCAR allowing the Cingular name, which was grandfathered in as a sponsor, being changed to AT&T.

I read an article about it and Alltel, Ryan Newman's sponsor just got aquired by another organization and wants to know its right as a sponsor and has been very generous in obeying the rules set by NASCAR. I can understand why Nextel doesn't want AT&T on a car because it would take away from Sprint Nextel and Sprint in General and Cingular was a grandfather company. It also said that Sprint Nextel is going to have to outline the terms of the sponsors more clearly in the contracts for the teams. I think that they tried to just cut Cingular off and say this is the way its going to be so back off but they should have maybe considered it more and Nextel had say but the Judge made the decision that it wasnt against the contracts because all the wording in the contracts about sponsors are kepy pretty much neutral so it doesn't offend anyone. I don't think it will hurt their business to much but because of this lawsuit I think they are losing some business so I wish it would jsut get over with and I dont think that other sponsors would want to do that and no one else really competes with Nextel except AT&T and Alltel but since it was aquired it may change names but the article said it more then likely will stay Alltel so no name change would be required.

Cingular was in NASCAR before Nextel bought in as was Alltel, Nextel did not forbid them because of contractual obligations. AT&T merged with Cingular and some of the Bell systems and had a new logo. RCR contended that Cingular is still there, but with a new name and logo. It's really a gray area, but NASCAR is big business and Cingular had a contract to sponsor the #31 long past the AT&T merger. I really don't care too much about who sponsors a car or a series, as I use Verizon. Nextel and Sprint merged too and Sprint became part of the contract Nextel signed with NASCAR.

Why should a company not be allowed to throw money at a team and sponsor it? Nextel shouldn't be allowed to have a "cell phone monopoly on NASCAR. I think Nextel has some might big cohones to think it has the right. AT&T's money is just as valuable as Bud, Dupont, Home Depot or Lowes.

NASCAR is a very expensive sport. Some teams have a hard time finding sponsors and Nextel is telling companies that want in or want to stay in to leave because its a competitor. Pretty bad idea. Same thing happened with Shell/Pennzoil (Harvick) and Sunoco (official fuel of NASCAR) where they made Harvick cover up the shell logo.

I am totally in favor of it. Nextel & Na$car were doing no more than acting like "Big Brother".... again. I'm glad Nextel lost the suit. There's still more to it. I'm hoping Nextel has to pay AT&T damages. I'm REALLY hoping that Nextel goes the way of Winston. Ever since they've become involved in Na$car our sport has become more about revenue than for the benefit of us fans.
Maybe when the France family dies out, or when the team owners decide to mutiny the way the Indy car owners mutinied against USAC forty years ago, our sport will get back to just racing.

When AT&T was bought out by SBC they decided to use a long lasting brand name for continuity for customers who often refer to their phone company as AT&T even before it was AT&T again..Cingular was AT&T wireless a couple of years ago and is now being changed back to AT&T so that it keeps one brand for its customers bundling services..There is no reason for NASCAR not to allow them to change the name from Cingular to AT&T..Stupid to think that they wouldn't be allowed to.

Yeah, as long as Jeff Burton is driving it, who cares if it changes from Cingular, to AT&T to maybe even Lennox Industrial Tools.... or Prilosec OTC. The man behind the wheel will never change. He's a clean and smart driver, and shows respect for other drivers. Go #31 Jeff Burton!!!

Well honestly it is only a name change, if a company offers the exact same thing and changes it name why not allow the new name to be put on the car? I really do not believe it is going to create that big of a problem anyhow.

ATT bought cingular so it only makes sense that they would want that name out front on the car...Nextel as we all know is only concerned with itself.

If AT&T bought out cingular they have every right to change the name.
