NO! Only 5 or 6 companies make all the brands of tvs worldwide. They build the tv to the specs of the brand name and then slap the brand name logo on the tv. Although a few companies like Samsung make their own panels, they all get their materials from about 3 or 4 companies worldwide. The specs of the tv is what you want to look for in an LCD tv.
Highest contrast ratio you can afford. Lowest response time you can find. Highest brightness you can find and make sure it has more than one HDMI input. The difference in price from brand name to brand name lies mainly in the overhead cost such as advertisement and plant operating costs. This is why the bigger more well known brands that advertise the most are also the more expensive brands. They aren't any better quality wise, they just make more tvs, have more employees and advertise more so they need to recoup the costs. People who come on here and compare buying an LCD tv to that of a car or clothes don't really know that facts that I just explained. There are many car and clothes manufacturers world wide so yes there ARE quality differences with those items.

The best 42" LCD for you would be the Toshiba Regza.

Different brands design their electronics differently and use different quality parts to make them work.

Sony uses the best quality parts available and their designs are very efficient with protection circuitry, surge protections and lightning paths to take.

High quality units are made to last. Unlike Samsung with poor support and (quality) no protection circuitry 1 part goes bad can cause a catastrophic failure!

Yeah course it matters if you buy from a trusted brand name you won't go far wrong.
behind those brand names are often years of experiance, if you buy of some back alley company whats your chances of getting a good one?

Try john lewis, they might not be the cheapest but they give better garentees and actualy follow up on them

Does the brand of car you drive matter?

Does the brand of clothing you wear matter?

Remember, "Buy cheap, buy twice".

What you need to look at is contrast resolution. The resolution will be the same, but the contrast resolution probably won't.
