Aspirin only. Bufferin is best. No ibuprofen or acetaminophen. Animals don't understand a Dr's orders to "take it easy" sometimes it is best they feel the pain so they don't over exert themselves a cause more damage.

I agree with the others here that you should get another vet. I am sure this one had a high charge so in this case call him back and tell him the dog is in extreme pain and needs something and ask about baby aspirin. Don't give other human stuff even though vets prescriptions are often for the exact same things humans take and vets charge a lot more for their prescriptions. Sometime it is cheaper. Vet insulin is like 20 dollars and human is 80 dollars and they are exactly the same thing - exactly. If this vet says bring in dog again so he can examine for prescription - say no - he just wants to charge you again - then give baby aspirin by weight table. And next time you need a vet - take the poor dog to a better one than this. Sure hope he feels better soon and that gets you both some relief. This vet has caused you both too much anxiety.

RE:
Can dogs take people pain pills? Like tylenol?
My dog got hit by a car and the vet said to let him heal on his own and would not give her any pain pills. My dog flew about 8-10 feet when the car hit her. She is walking but in extreme pain. I need a serious answer.

Yes, a Tylenol will be fine except make sure its an 81 mg baby aspirin. Tylenol is available in several flavors and are also chewable. One thing i need to mention never give a dog Motrin or Ibuprofen, it can harm the kidneys and can cause severe damage, even death. It is extremely toxic, I didn't,t realize until I gave my Jrt a 1/4 of an 800 mg. for a pulled tendons and ligaments, his injury didn't heal had to take him to the vet and that is how I learned how toxic it is.

Get a new vet!!! I'm serious. Any vet that refuses you medication for a dog that got hit by a car should not be a vet!
First of all Tylenol and Advil is NOT ok to give dogs. Tylenol and Generic Acetaminophen can cause IRREVERSIBLE DAMAGE to LIVER and other organs.
Here is my source:

I'm very sorry to hear about your dog. If it were me, I would go to a different vet.

No dogs cant tolerate Tylenol at all or anything else for humans. Vets will sometime tell people to give a baby aspirin but for your dog it may be very harmful. Call your vet back and tell them of your dogs extreme discomfort and have them prescribe something for him.
Anything over the counter will do more harm than good.

Do not give your dog any people meds! While dogs can occasionally have human meds, the dosing is very different. But no tylenol or advil or anything like that! It could be fatal.
Get a new vet, even if he is going to heal on his own, your vet should have given pain meds, that is just cruel! Get a new vet TODAY.
REPORT your vet, that is just cruel!

dogs and some animals have a higher pain threshold then humans (they can handle more) , I owuld talk to the vet about the problem , but do not give canine , human pain management pills , asprin in human doses kills small animals . so you will need to get a specific dose for the animal. I would suggest that you do not give any pain killers , as the animal will be fine how it is , it is less cruel not to give painkillers , because animals cannot interpret that a drug is taking the pain away , so in effect they do more damage to the injuries they have .

Absolutely Not... thats why they have pain pills for dogs and pain pills for humans, it will most likely kill your dog if it has any of it.
Seriously i woudl punch my vet if they said that, it is just horrible,,, people get treated for pain when we get hit by cars and dogs are smaller so i woudl go to a different vet and i woudl even go as far as to dob them in to someone to complain, that is animal cruelty on tehir part, not yours because you were told no and you cant get any pills without the vet...
Get a different vet ASAP..... and i hope your dog feels better, i woudl possibly suggest to maybe try and limit your dogs walking and moving around till you do get some pain pills to limit the pain... that is just a personla opinion..
Goodluck honey and i hope your dog heals quickly.

No, never give a dog Tylenol. You can call your vet & get pain medication from them, why didn't your vet want to give the dog pain medication in the first place? Here is a site for over the counter medications, you can give buffered aspirin & this site will give you the dosage, http://animalsunlimited.net/meds.htm

Definitely a big NO NO ! ! ! Go to a Vet, or better still get advice from another Vet. Human medication is way more stronger than animal medication. Your dog will need a lot of TLC and a very good Vet. If you give your dog Tylenol your actually signing his or her death warrant. SEE A VET ! Please !!!
