my husband works out before work in the mornings and he doesnt wear deodorant while he does this. he complains that his workout clothes reek like ammonia and i tell him maybe if he wore deo they wouldnt. he says the shirt smells around the neck. anyway, he says he's never heard of anyone wearing deo while working out ! he thinks i am weird for disagreeing. he says he takes a shower immediately after, then puts deo on to go to work. he doesnt see the point in wearing it during workout. isnt that what deo is made for?? to wear while sweating to prevent body odor !!?? someone please help. which one of us is right? i told him i'd show this to him.

Wearing deodorant before a workout is redundant.

You know that you are purposefully going to be working up a sweat for only a short period of time. That's why most people wear sweats as clothing for a workout. Deodorant is usually used in anticipation of accumulated odor build-up throughout the day, and not something to put on just to wash off almost immediately.

The clothes he works out in should be washed after each use rahter than putting on deodorant before a workout.

Okay, when it come to exercise etiquette the rule says to use deodorant...

Really, here's an article from an exercise magazine:

If you don't care what others think or how bad you reek then go without... Personally when I work out I want to work up a sweat and deodorants have chemicals that block your pores. And the odor? Well the odor is caused by bacteria. So you can control your odor to some extent by using antibacterial soaps after the work out. This is fine with me but then there is that nasty problem with the aroma emanating from my gym bag. Yep, after a good work out your clothes do stinko. Yeah this can only be cleaned with bleach.

If your husband workout in the morning without deodorant and does not like the way his clothes smell he needs to wash his workout clothes everyday and use deodorant.
He has no right to whine about the stench if he wont seriously do anything about it.
He should also pay attention to his diet that can have an effect on a persons smell.

I don't think it would really be beneficial to put on deoderant before working out because the point is to work out and sweat. If you don't sweat under the arms, then you are just going to sweat extra someplace else anyway and you can't exactly dip yourself in the stuff. His work out clothes reek because workout clothes just do, guys just smell a bit more on the musky side that most women. If he's taking a shower right after he's worked out, then he's removing the bacteria and excess sweat, and afterwards would be the most logical and useful time to apply it. Deoderant is just to cover up odor of bacteria reproducing in sweat, antiperspirant helps cut down on the amount produced. And none of it is really meant for above usual activity amounts of sweat, like one would expect to encounter in normal activities. It isn't meant to overcome the amounts of sweat produced in a workout. It wouldn't hurt anything if he put it on before, but it probably wouldn't make a big difference in the long run. His ordinary musky odor would still prevail in the end. As long as he keeps the reek to himself, and goes directly to the shower, then I think he should do as he pleases. As debatable items go in marriages, this one is kind of in the "which way to hang the toilet paper roll" category. I'd suggest letting him do it his way, as long as he puts the clothes on to wash and isn't in the huggy kissy mood prior to that shower. That would of course put things in a whole different light, and you would have valid reasons for objecting. Hmm, maybe that's some leverage if you wanted any...

I have tried both working out with and without deo and I notice a tremendous difference. When I come home after a workout without deo I am real musty and stank. But when I do wear deo the smell isn't nearly as bad.

I wear deodorant while working out, and I think it's weird not to.

However, it depends on how he was raised... maybe his parents/brothers/sisters/friends didn't wear deodorant while working out, and so he thinks it's normal not to while you and I think it's insane not to :)

One of my friends grew up thinking it's unhealthy to wash your hair often so she just gets it wet when taking showers and only actually uses shampoo 1-2 times a week, which I think is crazy--while she thinks I'm crazy for shampooing so often. It's all in what your parents raise you to think is normal.

But as far as popular opinion and what *most* people do, I'd say that deodorant definitely is a requirement during exercise!!

personally, i think deo is good for workout and everyday life.

and yes, the purpose of a deo is to keep the smell off! so working out with deo is a good idea.. it doesn't, however, entirely help the smell especially if you sweat excessively.

to each his own. buy him another deo exclusively for workout! :)

As he would have to wash off the deodorant immediately after a workout he would have to apply it twice. He could put it on twice, but it DOES make more sense to just wait until he is done with his shower AFTER he is done working out, unless he doesn't mind using up twice as much deodorant.

Why bother with deo if he is going to get all sweaty anyway. The deo should be used when you are not at the gym.He will shower afterwards anyway and the deo will be washed away so i agree with him, sorry.
