If a friend gives it to you and your not going to see them again before the occasion, they will probably want you to open it in front of them so they can see your reaction.

Sometimes people give you gifts and say "dont open this until the day" so obviously dont.

Although seen as you're asking this question it is possible that you have been in the same predicament recently and recieved an adverse reaction, so if you think you have offended anyone, just say to them next time you speak "thanks for the gift" and then just let them know that you would have opened it on the day, but that you wanted them to see your reaction, and thank them there and then for it

Hope that helps :)

That depends on cultural traditions....
Some people do it right in front of the guests. Others, wait until the party is over. In the former way, it is to show how much you appreciate what you have received. In the latter way, it is not to show how anxious you might be to check other peoples' generosity...

It depends where you are. In a casual restaurant, or someplace that you have someplace to set it and open it properly and not bother anyone, now is good.
In a fancy place, or if a good place to unwrap it is not available, wait until there is.
And if the person giving it to you wants you to open it now, or later, factors in.
If I'm in a public place, I always ask, do you want me to open it now? No one ever said no.

If they expect you to open it, then do. If there are too many to open, then do it in the privacy of your home.
