I've always thought that if congress were to pass legislation in regard to drinking age, it should be that anyone with a military id ages 18-21 should be allowed to purchase alcohol anywhere....of course, the problem with that is that drinking age is a state law, not a federal law, so congress really doesn't have that authority, anyway. Oh well.
Anyway, I enlisted in the Army at age 18, and it turned out that we went to war just a few weeks later (I went in the delayed entry program in February of 1990, and left for basic training on August 2nd, 1990, the same day that Iraq invaded Kuwait). I was lucky enough not to go over that one, mainly because it was over and troops were coming home before I finished my training, but I was ready. 18 in my generation (i'm 35 now) I think were better prepared for that kind of thing than the kids today.

I feel that when a person is an adult which is age 18 here in the US (and still a teenager), they should have a choice if they want to fight for their country. When I served in the Marines, I was able to drink beer at the age of 18 at Camp Pendleton because it was so close to Mexico. I think the priviledge to fight for my country is a far more important priviledge then it is to drink alcohol. I think the military recruits young people because they are at their prime. Boot camp can mold any person at any age in my opinion. (at least Marine Corps boot camp can)

Kids in the UK can leave school at 16 and make their career choices before they leave, if they join the army at 16 they will be training at AFC for 42 weeks as a junior entry recruit . they then have to go the ATR of their choice for a further 20 weeks. this puts them battle ready at 17-18 years old with a greater sense of maturity than most young adults who haven't been through the training.
you need to have your parents permission if your under 18 and wish to join.
The British Army produces well trained disciplined soldiers
that few other nations can match.
I would be proud if my son was to join at 16. i would also know that he would have the best training available and not be fighting until he was 17.9 years at least. by that time he would be mature enough to cope with any situation he may find him self in.

You're considered an adult at age 18 so they have every right to fight. They are trained the same as everyone else and in good physical shape. If someone, no matter what their age is, wants to fight for the freedom of our country, then I have no problem with them joining. And just a quick FYI.. they recently changed the rules regarding servicemen and women on drinking in the military.

Lets see if they are 18 19 years old that means they are adults. so yes adults should fight in wars and not kids. if they are not old enought to by beer here there are other countries out there that have no drinking age.

That age is the most physically fit. It is a shame that the young have to suffer for the decisions of the middle aged and old.
I really disagree with sending the National Guard to Iraq.

you cant win a war by bringing Grandad & Grandmother along, they are to old and too slow.

Its a volunteer military.... If they are recruited, its because they wanted to be recruited.
All ive seen coming from you are stupid questions.... You are ignorant... Why dont you join the military and find out for yourself... Have some pride in your country, atleast for the troops.

to inform you as to what the service men and woman can do.
when they make the decision to join, they are no longer kids.
at the age of 18, they have to grow up. if a minor then parents have to give consent.
when you are enlisted in the military, YOU can drink alcohol
but only on base, not our in the bars off base(stateside not off base), overseas in germany, there age limit is 16 so could drink all we wanted wherever we wanted.
so that is a dead issue.
and i know this for a fact, my army i.d. allowed me to drink all
i wanted to in germany.
TO SERVE OUR COUNTRY IS AN HONOR .
not all are cut out for it, but for the ones that do serve
and have served. hold your head, so that you can see the
respect and salutes you receive.
GOD BLESS OUR TROOPS
