If it is only indoors, when people go outside for a puff where do they put the ciggarette out, because they aren't supposed to drop it anymore are they, even though they do, surely there will be even more cigarette ends on the street if they can't smoke inside ?
Just curious, I'm NOT a smoker and have longed for the time when I no longer have to breath other peoples smoke, but I see people breaking the laws already in place and I wonder how these bans will be enforced?

I'm not a smoker either, and I hate it that the outdoors is becoming the smokers area! If I want to sit outside at many restaurants I'm out there gagging from the smoke.

Enforcement may involve a complaint and then action on the part of the restaurant or establishment, which then has to act or face a possible fine.

But what's sad is having to legislate and enforce what should be managed by the individuals involved. I believe the ban should be voluntary and compliance dictated by public pressure. It would take a bit longer to get everybody on board, but it might be worth it.

Tossing aside a cigarette butt to the ground instead of placing it (unsmoldering) into a trash receptacle, is and has always been considered littering, and a person can be fined for this action.

I have heard that there is a certain distance that is supposed to be maintained from windows and doorways when smoking outdoors, but am not certain what it is.

i live in the channel islands and we went no smoking under uk guidelines on jan 2 this year. so no smoking in pubs clubs and any indoor work place, even company vehicles. but outdoors is fine unless you are in a covered area such as a cafe with outside tables and an awning.the pub i frequent has put tables and chairs outside for smokers even heaters and a tv it is in the best interest of all traders to cater for smokers and over here we have no problem.traders provide ashtrays either wall mounted or free standing

I think it is only indoors. Maybe the answers might depend on what country you're talking about.

Smoking is injurious to health.Whether you are smoking inside or outside, it will kill you one day silently. Prohibiting smoking means it should be in either inside or outside. The law breakers should be punished severely.

Anyone who willfully pays $5.00 a pack for cigarettes that stain their teeth, sicken their breath, ADDICT them, and cause major health problems including DEATH, should just be shot and put out of their misery. Stupid is as stupid does, and they sure are stupid. Shoot them before they reproduce and create little tobacco burning idiots.
