Like most of the others have pointed out, pain is all a part of the process. In some cases, pain is really what the tattoo is all about. Knowing that you sat through the pain, sometimes for hours at a time, and having something to show for it is like a reward.

I like to think that most tattoos are badges of courage. They show what you've endured and how strong you are.

If you're still in doubt, just know that when you go for, what I'm assuming is your first tattoo, that your artist can always do a small test line just to give you an idea of what the pain will be like. Also, as someone else mentioned, you'll probably want to stick to fatty areas like the arms. Areas where there isn't much flesh between the skin and bones can be particularly painful.

You should not take anything...The cream that people are referring to is called Emla Cream. It is by prescription only and topically numbs you. Catch is this...depending on the size of the tattoo and how long it takes to get, once the medicine wears off, your nerves will be a bit more sensitive and shocked when it suddenly feels the tattoo. You therefore run the chance of making the tattoo more painful than it really needs to be. In addition, you do not want to run the risk of affecting the turnout of the tattoo because your skin is numbed and may not take the ink as well. Pain killers can also potentially thin your blood and that extends the tattoo process and can affect the outcome.

I have a needle phobia and I was able to get a tattoo...my recommendation would be not to take anything. It isn't the most comfortable for the first 5 minutes but after that, your endorphines start to kick in and your body doesn't go numb but it adapts to the feeling and it's really not so bad.

I'll tell you what many told me prior to getting the tattoo...you want the ink, you have to deal with the pain of getting it.

It's really not that bad...

I agree with the whole "Bad placement" idea. I have been wanting one for a gazillion years now, but due to the fact that i dont know where my career is going to take me i am holding back for now. Just keep that in mind, im not here to preach. Anyway, there is no way to reduce the pain, the most pain you will feel will ONLY be mostly when the tattoo is being done. After that, it will only feel like a really really bad sunburn. If you touch it or bump into it, its going to sting. IT will not hurt as bad afterwards, trust me, you will think the pain from bumping into the tattoo afterwards will be far less than the pain from when ti was being done. :)

Like Jkc said be careful painkillers have a tendancy to thin your blood, causing you to bleed out the ink and screwing up the tattoo just try a small tattoo on an out of sight place to start. Most of the time the pain is very temporary my arms tend to go numb after the first few minutes. Maybey try distracting your mind take your mp3 player and listen to some music to dround out the sounds and focus your mind on something else ( a large part of pain tends to be in the mind if the mind is not on the pain then it does not hurt as bad) This works for me at the dentist as i am terrified by them lol. The tattoos are not terribly painful its really dependant on where you put it.

Good Luck

Yes, there are topical anesthetic creams and gels you can buy to anesthetize the top layer of skin. However, many tattoo artists prefer that people don't use these for some reason. Just apply the gel to the area you're getting tattooed 5-15 minutes before the actual tattoo. If the area has hair, be sure to shave it before applying the gel, as the hair will need to removed anyway in order to ink it. Also, try taking 400-600 mg of Ibuprofen 1-2 hours before the tattoo. That should ease the pain slightly.

Do not take pain killers. They increase bleeding which effects the tattoo. I have to sign a paper saying I have not taken anything before getting the tattoo. You are spending money on something that is a permanent piece of art on your body. You don't want to do anything that could potentially effect the out come. Pain is part of the process.

Tattoos really don't hurt all that bad. Like others have said, try to stay away from bony areas. Don't take anything like painkillers or alcohol. It thins your blood and causes more bleeding which is not good for the tattoo. Just tough it out. It's not that bad, you'll be fine.

yeah, there is a cream that can reduce the pain. I'm not sure that the tatto artist will allow you to do that though, because the cream will make your skin slippery (i think). Just take a pain killer. Plus, if you want to get a tattoo, you have to be prepared for the pain!!!!!!!!!!! No pain, no gain!

Don't use anything.
Just find your 'zone' and focus to stay there while the work is being done.
May seem silly to anyone else, but I just imagine the pain dispersing throughout my body, as if my whole body is absorbing the pain instead of that one particular spot. Works for me anyway. Do something like this, whatever works for you, with some meditational breathing. Works like a charm.
