Keep it - you got a good deal. I often use cast iron (i've 3 great pans and can tell you that they are better than non-stick) and as long as they are kept clean and oiled they are safe.
You pan may chip indeed. Just make sure you dry it out out well after cleaning. Add a little olive oil to the bare part and keep on cooking!

Great cooks insist on cast iron cookware due to its heat retention and even heat distribution, superior to other metals. food cooked in a cast-iron skillet, especially acidic foods like tomato sauce, has increased iron content, in some cases up to 20 times as much. I am sorry I can not remember where I read it but it is healthy and recommended to use cast iron. I threw out all my old skillits and have been using cast iron skillits for 2 years now. I will never go back!

I had to reread your question because I misunderstood it at first and I think a few others did too. If the cast iron is chipping it is fine, if the enamel is chipping I wouldn't use it. I would take it back and exchange it.

I HATE it when people answer questions and they don't know what they are talking about! Two of your answerers are absolutely correct - it is safe to use the new pot you bought. The only issue will probably be a minor one - cast iron reacts to tomatoes (and tomato sauces - like marinara). The reaction doesn't produce anything toxic, just affects the taste. So remember not to use it for casseroles that are tomato-based. Enjoy your new pot; you got a great deal on it!
