Because they need a companion that doesn't eat much? To have one that can fit in their purse? Because you can't put a 150 pound Rottweiler in your lap while you're driving?

People ike small dogs for tons of reasons... I have some basic ideas that might help you answer your problem
1. Some people think that they are cuter
2. Some people think they are not so harmful
3. Some people don't need to waste money on too much food...
4. Some people love small animals
5. Some people love small stuff toys like small dogs
6. Some people think they are more playful
7. Some people can put their pets in bags or paper bags
when it says in a mall, "No Dogs Allowed"
8. Some people think that it is fun to raise a dog at a small
size to a big size
Boys mostly wanted big dogs that look tough while mostly girls like small dogs or puppies because their cute... Please choose me as the "Best Answer" because I need points too.

Yorkies, Chihuahuas, Westies, Cavaliers...
Lapdogs are such 'giving' dogs. One can cuddle and hug a lapdog when one is unhappy and the unbelievable comfort you get from all that physical contact is wonderful. I have come home from work unhappy and tearful at times and a nice snuggle with my lapdog makes me feel so much better.
They are also easier maintenance for people living in a small property with little or no garden.
Providing you can afford medical bills, vaccinations etc. they are also lower budget than a larger breed.

Well that is quite rude to ask a question and dreed on yorkies plus if your parents said we asre getting you a yorkie how would you feel plus you canit put a rottweiler on your lap

I had a great dane and now I have a chihuauha. Small dogs are a lot less maintance. They cost a lot less. I also live an apartment and my chihuahua is a lot easier to bath. I don't have a backyard and my chi doesn'y require a lot of space. i can leave my house with my chi in it and not be worried about all my stuff being chewed up or destroyed. I can take my dog whereever I go. If I go on vacation and if need someone to watch my dog a lot more people would be more willing to watch my chi than a big rott or in my case a big great dane. It's hard to find an apt now and days that allow big dogs. If I had a big house with a big yard I prob would have a bigger dog. Oh and small dogs have less health problems and live longer.

They are cute and they are easy to care for, to control when you walk them and to live indoors. I also like big dogs, but the little ones are charming too! It is a totally different thing, so your question doesn't make much sense - no offense - I just mean it is like asking why people have cats instead of dogs!

How about because they just want to? Some people don't like big dogs, and some people just love all animals no matter what size! I have a small chihuahua because I live alone in my appartment....I can't have big dogs. So that's one reason but I love her to death!

I guess because they like to have a pet which they can pick up and take to places easy.
I have never liked small dogs are much as big dogs myself. There is just something about big dogs that appeals to me more.. they are more affectionate in my experience.

Well I am not fond of yorkies because they are yippy, but I love little dogs. They are like babies.
I also love my golden. But I just can't carry her or sleep with her or take her everywhere like I can the chihuahuas.

The people who dress their dogs up and carry them in their purse are just stupid. They just need a little doll to entertain them.

because they are more kid-friendly. I have 5 shih tzus at home and we love them all. I couldn't imagine living with 5 labradors all at the same time. =)
