SGLI is just a term life insurance policy, just like any other. The difference being that it is geared specifically at the military. There are many career fields in the military that cannot get adequate coverage any other way. Also, many insurance policies will not pay up if killed in a war or police action, again, something our folks need!
The active duty member has to decide how much insurance he/she wants, up to 400,000. They then have money taken out of their pay every month to pay for the insurance... it's not a gimme. I believe that for the full 400,000, a service member would pay approx. $400 a year (sorry, can't give you exact, don't have hubbies les)
So... to answer your question.... if the service member has elected to pay for SGLI, and dependent upon how much coverage he has, his beneficiary would receive payment for that policy.
ADDITION!!
Death benefits - that is entirely different! Below I've listed the links to the services and their Survivor benefit website. They should have more information for you. And as a military member, you really should already know this, especially about SGLI. We have a file of everything I would possibly need if the unthinkable should ever happen.

About.com has outdated numbers. Military.com has updated information, included the rest of the survivors benefits. As an army wife, it is imperative that I know benefits just in case something happens. I know I will be taken care of VERY WELL in the case of my husbands death. Doesnt mean I dont love my husband with all my heart, but I need to know that me and my children will be taken care of in the death of my husband. It is just another conversation, like what I bought at the commissary or what I had for lunch today. No big deal.

The 10K thing went on forever. I remember that was the payout for life insuance during my watch, but then, we didn't have 80 billion dollar wartime budgets in the era leading up to Vietnam !!
The families do receive the death benefits for those poor souls who return home in a body bag !

Wow, do you want somebody to die that bad? The total is 400, 000 unless you select a smaller amount. A friend of mine passed away 2 years ago and her family got half after her death are are getting payments now. She also had money put away in the Thrift Savings Plan.
It is good for your loved ones if something happens to you.

If different worldwide places do not intervein and we ignore approximately them. it is going to flow to our areas. IN WW1 they found that. the U. S. does not connect in the combat to end the unfold of germany's military until US civilian ships have been sunk 3 years into the conflict. We did not connect WW2 until Pearl Harbor. it does not look we commencing activily struggling with in the middle east until after 9/11. Does it take a loss of yankee lifes for others to step forward and combat? think of roughly that and you're able to remember why we've provider member prepared to combat in the middle east. it somewhat is to maintain human beings ree to submit and not using a terror of reformatory, dying, and so on. desire to thank you for reminding others of that. i comprehend this could be a community I even have good emotions approximately in case you are able to tell
