The answer is not as simple as you would think. If it were, there would not be an epidemic of overweight pets in North America. Cats have different nutritional requirements depending on their stage of life, activity level, and whether they are pregnant, nursing, ill, or suffering from parasites.

The crux of the matter is that your cat should be fed enough high quality food to maintain good health and body condition.

The quality of the food is important as you generally need to feed less of a higher quality food to maintain your pet's healthy weight with greater health benefits. Pet food cost should be compared on a cost per feeding basis, as a bag of high quality food may seem much more expensive, but often isn't. Also, don't confuse high price with high quality.

Your veterinarian can assist you in selecting the best diet for your cat based on its age, health status, and body condition score. Older pets can have hidden health concerns that can be addressed with special prescription diets.

My personal choice for my pets is Hills brand pet food available at pet stores or your veterinarian. Feeding directions are on the bag, but may have to be adjusted depending on your pet's response (gaining or losing an unacceptable amount of weight).

At the moment, both cats get between 2/3 to a full can (5.5 oz) per day of canned food.

On alternate days, they get a handful - about 1/8 cup - of dry Evo.

Each evening, they get a bit of raw ground rabbit (including organs and bones) mixed in with their canned food.

When researching obesity, I had learned that you can feed a can of good quality food per day and your cat will still lose weight. I've found that to be true, but because the one I'm feeding is probably a bit higher in carbs than it should be, I think 2/3 of a can is more appropriate.

I'm in the process of trying to convert them both to eating raw, so I'm varying amounts a bit.

In the morning my cat gets a piece of raw meat (about 100 g), and he likes it a lot! He also has got a bowl with a handful of dry food and a bowl of fresh water. I add more food to his bowl when I see that it's empty. I can't say how much he eats every day but a 1 kg pack of Iams Adalt 1+ Light is enough for 20 - 25 days.

You can use what's called "free feeding" of dry food. (dry food has better nutritional value than wet food) Basically, you have food set out for your cat all day and he or she is free to munch when he or she is hungry. This is a way to help prevent your cat from becoming over weight. When you free feed your cat he or she has a lower tendency to over eat. Also, you don't have as much of a problem with the cat gobbling down too much food at once.

My cat is about 14 years old and she eats 1/2 cup of dry food and 2 spoonfuls of wet food a day plus some treats.

A cat needs about one cup of dry food put out, to nibble thru the day, and a meal of one cup canned food once a day.

they should be fed at least twice day. You should mix it up with dry food and wet/moist food. Make sure you have a large bowl of clean fresh water for your cat, which is always filled - cats NEED access to clean fresh water all day.

well you could give your cat some cat food at night (the amount that's for his weight)usually its written on the packet and then through out the day some cat crochets and he should be fine.

Just like she said, one cup of dry food.
But beware! Don't overfeed your feline....
Cats don't know when to stop eating, so they will eat as much as you feed them!
Unless you want a Garfield for a pet....
