I have a traveler's cheque made out to me. It was issued by American Express, can I take it to a store (Publix,Krogers, etc) and cash it, or can I take it to a bank (I don't have a bank here, I'm out of town) and get cash for it there or does it have to be deposited in a bank account?

Thanks!

**These are not my cheques. They were not issued to me. It was made out to me from the person they were issued to**

Many (but not all) stores will accept payment by travellers cheque. They do not have to. At a store you should get full value for a travellers cheque, whereas a bank will charge a commission. You may have to have ID with you when you cash it.

It is not a requirement for anywhere to cash a travelers check. Typically the further away you are from a tourist area the less likely you are to find a place that will.

If you are worried ask, you should get an answer straight away or within a few minutes. Your best bet would be the larger chain stores who are more used to handling travelers checks from other locations.

If the store does accept travelers checks then they will require you to prove your identity is the same as that of the person issued on the travelers check. A driving license should do for this.

generally speaking a store wont cash a travellers check and you have to go to a bank although it depends on how nice your local store owners are.

Either way you will likely get charged for the transaction.
