I wonder why Christians can't answer a simple question without taking up so much room with cut and pasted scripture..That nobody reads or wants to read...
Oh, I know, it's because they can't think for themself/s..
The Bible is a book of terror, a faerie tale book...
I believe if a bloke rapes a woman, he should forfeit his right to breath the free air, any air for that matter...
I believe in Capital Punishment....
Blessed Be.. )O(

This law does two things well: first, it is severe enough to discourage rape; second, it insures exactly what the rape otherwise would have made impossible, which is a marriage for the woman.

Consider, in the US, a rapist usually gets a couple years in prison and often gets out early. What if our law forced a rapist to clothe, house, feed, and completely support a raped woman for the rest of her entire life? That's a far greater burden than a few piddly years in a cell, dreaming about another attack.

Especially poetically just is the last bit: "he will never be allowed to divorce her." Was it Congreve who wrote, "Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned"? The rapist not only completely supports this woman, but he also must live right there with her while she exacts revenge every single day for the rest of her life (if she chooses). She will never forget what happened to her, but this law insures that he will live with the consequences of that action for the rest of his life.

Hello Riotgirl,

I have seen some of your other posts and it is obvious you don't think much of God or the Bible or Christian people. It is difficult to answer someone like you, because I don't think you would accept any answer, this is just an opportunity for you to vent.

The bible does not say "caught in the act of raping" by the way. These verses discuss what to do with someone having sex outside of marriage.

The Bible is broken up into the Old Testament which means "Old Law" and the New Testament which means "new law." When Jesus was born, the new law began and was given.

In the old testament it says "an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth" In the new testament Jesus speaks of Forgiveness and Love. As Christians we look to the old Testament for our history, but Christ changed the rules and we no longer operate under the "Old Law" If we did, there would be a lot more farmers selling cattle to be sacrificed for the atonement of our sins like they used to do.

Take into account that these verses were written in a time when a woman's virginity was prized and only women who were "pure" had any prospect of marriage. So that man had an obligation to the woman after harming her. In that time period the woman's only hope was that the man who took her virginity would be expected to care for her for the rest of her life, and that he had specific duties as a husband if he followed the laws of the land. So, when you look at it from that perspective, it is more compassionate than punishing the woman for the rest of her life, by taking away her prospects for a decent marriage.

But you may want to read two stories in the Old Testament where the women were raped and what happened in those cases. Diana, was the sister of the 12 Sons of Israel. She was raped and her brothers avenged her. She never married and was cared for by her brothers.

Tamar, was one of King David's daughters and was raped by her half brother. She begged him to marry her and he refused. He was punished by his father.

Just remember that when you look at the Mosaic Law, this was written several centuries ago in a very different culture. So, when you look at it from the alternatives given to the woman in those cases, it was actually the most compassionate alternative in that time period.

So are you announcing that the bible is incorrect and the understand God isn't stimulated and Paul additionally misheard God while the giving and taking of another is a curse? Or are you asserting that homosexuality as a prepare isn't sin and for this reason adultery and fornication shouldn't sins the two as this is written interior the equivalent verse? in fact love isn't sin which you should love all and sundry be there accomplice inspite of the shown fact that it turns into sin once you carry the relationship into the actual. you are able to no longer cherry pick the be conscious it desires to be all of it or none of it. we've have been given to handle actual anybody with love grace and mercy. there is not any room for disrespect bullying incorrect judgment or ridicule. yet should not be love as quickly as we tell those that some situation that God announces sin is positive thinking now we are emancipated and all of us comprehend extra effectual than God.

Just because it is in the bible does not mean it was law handed down my God. Also, the laws of the old testament, besides the 10 commandments are Jewish law, not Christan doctrine. It is not like the bible can be taken literally on every issue. Sheesh, like we have slaves, hand maidens and such.
If you are that concerned, why don't you study the bible as a scholar so you don't have to be worried being branded a "believer"- gasp.
It is just as good reading and as much of a classic as Plato's "The Republic" or Dante's "Inferno".

Remember, this was under the Old Testament (the Old Covenant) and the Dispensation of Law. Today, we are under the New Testament (the New Covenant of Jeremiah 31:31) which is the Covenant of Dispensation of Grace.

In the Old Testament, failure to comply to this law was a death sentence! Which also became the law down through the ages, for a long time.

I first began reading the Bible from cover to cover when I was 15. I was not Christian then. I had the same reaction of utter disgust. There's something I didn't take into account, though, when reading it. That was then. This is now. Christians do not follow the laws you find in Exodus, Deuteronomy, and Leviticus. In their time, they were actually progressive laws. I applaud that you are actually taking the time to read the Bible, though, and to question it.

(You will find that if you actually took the time to get to know a genuine Christian, our main purpose in life is to live with deep compassion and love.)

Speaking from a person who was raised in strict upbringing and who was joined in matrimony to a man who was 10 years my senior because it was my parents will for me to do so [ arranged marriage], I can see where you are " Scoffing " God's Scipture into something that makes it look bad.
Today in our society, efforts are being made to look at sexual abuse as " sexual orientation ". Some are trying to make abusers appear as normal people. Regarding abusers, some are saying, " they are turned on by little children; that's just the way they are. We cannot look down on them; we must accept them as they are." If that were to become norm in our society, there is no telling the negative impact it could generate. The effect sexual abuse on children would not be addressed. Children would have to cope with a society that ignores their pain.
To even imagine the reprecussions of feeling violated, the shame, the negative images we would think of ourselves, let alone the consequences of such a violation.
To assume for a minute that we accept sexual abusers as normal people by allowing them to not even pay for what they did, leaves me jittery inside.
So I ask you, do you not think that people who commit such a terrible act, such as rape, walk away, scott free? I think not!
Thankfully we have laws in place today for these perpetrators to be held accountable for their actions. Likewise back in the first century, they too had laws, perhaps to us today, they may seem to be stringent, but bear in mind, if you will, that we are talking about the First Century here.
Even today we still have cultures where pre-arranged marriages are taking place. Like it was for me, I was not to familar with the man that I was married off to, my parents only knew the basics about him, job, home, etc.. Teenagers today get pregnant with guys who don't even stick around ( and not even held accountable), how do we understand, or for that matter, why do we not judge these situations.
For judging laws they had back in the first century and condoning those very same issues in the twnety first century, tells me that your sole purpose in selecting various scriptures out of God's word, you are no better off than Dan Browne
( The Da Vinci Code)!
..........................................
" Harken unto me, ye that know righteousness, the people in whose heart is my law; fear ye not the reproach of men, neither be ye afraid of their revilings. " (Isaiah 51:7)
...........................................
My hope and my prayer for you is that while you are sifting through God's word, that God will open your eyes so that you too will understand His Holy word! God Bless
