How can it be moral to sell your daughter as a sex slave?

" When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she will not be freed at the end of six years as the men are. If she does not please the man who bought her, he may allow her to be bought back again. But he is not allowed to sell her to foreigners, since he is the one who broke the contract with her. And if the slave girl's owner arranges for her to marry his son, he may no longer treat her as a slave girl, but he must treat her as his daughter. If he himself marries her and then takes another wife, he may not reduce her food or clothing or fail to sleep with her as his wife. If he fails in any of these three ways, she may leave as a free woman without making any payment." - Exodus 21:7-11 NLT

To fully understand the Bible, you have to understand the historical context in which it was written. Back then, women were second class chattel, so these laws were actually quite progressive because they allowed a woman to be free if she was mistreated by her man.

Read on to the new testament. The teachings and laws continue to become more and more progressive, especially when Jesus comes along.

I don't know, but I asked a similar question, at the link below, earlier today. You might like reading some of the answers. One person claimed that slavery was different back then, it wasn't like slavery in 19th century America, but I referenced another verse in Exodus 21 that said it was alright to beat your slave to death if it took them over a day to die. I'd say that Exodus 21 is one of the most reprehensible, amoral chapters in the Bible, though I can think of a few others, like 1 Samuel 15. Chapters such as Exodus 21 have contributed little more than misery to man's existence.

Well unfortunately God can only reveal Truth as the inhabitants of the Earth are willing to hear it. Back then the people weren't ready to hear that slavery is bad. But thank goodness for continued revelation. When Jesus came he said that the law of Moses was fulfilled meaning that He was providing more Truth and that somethings in the Law of Moses have changed. For example the law of Moses says "Thou shalt not kill" Christ says, "Thou shalt not be angry with thy brother".... So the law of Moses may have said that it's ok to have slaves under certain conditions and Christ said, no it's not (alright so there was a lot of paraphrasing there but you get the idea) God continues to reveal more and more Truth as the inhabitants of the world are ready to accept it.

What's the problem?

I don't see anything wrong there. People had slaves before this time that we are living. It in itself didn't make those people evil. The economy depended upon slaves for a time, all until recent times.

Why do people thiink that everybody thought excatly the same as we do now? Why do we judge people in the past according to our standards? I think it's ridiculous.

um, yeah.
considering people's attitudes back then, this was really merciful. she's being taken care of. The fact that her father had to sell her meant that she had no dowry. The idea of "buying" and "selling" people is not that uncommon. It has only been in the last one hundred years (and CONSIDER this against ALL of written human history) that slavery is abolished.

Do you see anywheres in this scripture where God condons slavery? No I think not.
Much slavery in those days were on a volunteer basic "by choice" for one reason or another. God just govern the way they
should be treated.
