They are missing minerals that is not found in their food. Try "K-Zyme" it's the best ever...http://www.vetamerica.com/index.asp?PageAction=PRODSEARCH&txtSearch=K-Zyme+Cat

Unfortunately lots of dogs do it, just a lot of people don't realize. It can be a territorial behaviour, the same dogs will poop around their outer boundary area of the yard and eat others to get rid of the scent. Some do it due to the poop still having nutritional values still in it.
You can add tinned pineapple, a large spoon to your dogs meal if he is eating his own, this makes it less appealing to them.
The only other thing you can do is teach your dog a command to leave and another for when he can eat and hope he listens to you when tempted.
Good luck

it all started along time ago when dogs would lick there puppies butts to get them to have there first bowel movements and to protect there puppies from predators they would eat the feces to get rid of the smelly poop so predators wouldnt hunt them down. and some dogs just get a taste for it although dogs dont have as many taste buds as humanes so they are not as sensitive to the taste as we are,if you want to stop the behavior try putting canned pumpkin in there food or meat tenderizer seasoning ,so when it comes back out it wont smell as appetizing as it does normally. hope this helps!!
