My fiancee just left on his first deployment to korea in January. We were planning to get married next year but is it possible for him to take leave and come back since he did AIP. And if he did come back, how long would we have to be together until he leaves again.

First, to answer the question - yes he can come back on leave. Now, for the ever present "BUT" when dealing with the military - it must be approved by his chain of command. Their decision to approve it will be based on how much leave he has available, how long he has been in country, and unit strength at the time (only a certain percentage of a unit can be gone at any given time). The amount of time he well get will depend on the amount of leave he has saved up. As a general rule, from Korea, they normally do not approve anything less than 14 days, but there are all kinds of exceptions to this and it is NOT a policy, just general practice. Just as a P.S. - Korea is not considered a "deployment" except in certain very specific locations/times, it is a permanent duty station and because of its restrictions it is sometimes called a "hardship tour." A deployment entails a tour in a combat theater or as part of a specific operation. You can even be "deployed" from Korea into a combat theater just as you can be deployed from Germany or the US or any other assignment. It may seem like a little thing, but in the military terms and definitions mean a lot as there are certain benefits and entitlements that are available based on them. "Military members meet deployment criteria anytime they leave the physical locale of the parent command and enter an environment for operational deployment or are stationed in a hostile territory."

is it a deployment, or a Remote Tour?

during Remotes, they often have the opportunity to take 2 weeks Leave about half way through.

Otherwise, don't plan on it happening. My own wedding(to a Sailor) was pushed back three times due to Operational Commitments.

Korea is considered a duty station and not a deployment.

He can take leave from Korea if he has the days, up to a month if he chooses.

You could go visit him in Korea afterward. Also, he could put in paperwork through the chain of command after getting married and try to live off post, in which case he could buy you a ticket and you could join him for the rest of his tour.

Girl I am sorry to tell you this but good luck with getting him home for a planned wedding date. Chances are that he will not even know when he would be allowed to take leave time if he could. And if he is allowed it will only be about 2 weeks, which includes flight time. Welcome to the hard reality of the military world.

i am an army wife and there is absolutely no way he will be able to come back home unless he has R and R and that will only be for 2 weeks.
