What is the best way to tell whether being an RN, or being a nurse in a specialized area...such as surgical nursing....is right for me?

Without actually working in the field....its hard for me to tell.

I know that I am good with people...but other than that...I dont know.

Go to your local school (where a nursing program is offered) and ask to speak with someone there that can guide you.

Call the local hospital and see if they have a forum where you could speak withy several nurses and get their opinions.

Good Luck!

Nursing at the professional level is a demanding job, especially in any hospital setting. If you have a 'weak stomach' don't even consider RN work in surgery or in an ER.

There are many opportunities for RN's in other areas, such as cardiac rehab, GI nursing, nursing home care or similar. You need to decide what area of work would make you comfortable, and then decide if you want to gain your degree in nursing. Also be aware that some hospitals are no longer hiring RN's without a college level BSN.

The best way is to work as a Home Health Aide (HHA), or certified nursing assistant (CNA). I highly suggest working in both to get the feel of both sides as each is different from the other. It will help you to see how you feel about helping others as well as the dirty work involved, if you can handle it or not.
