The 1990s models are notorious for a weak transmission.

Don't even get me started! If you like the Ford Taurus then please don't read this... My 1995 Taurus was the most horrible car I ever owned! Before I start, I DO NOT ABUSE MY CARS! I always take care of them no matter what, and this car was horrible. I hated it since day one when my Dad brought it home, and I hated it 9 years later until the day I was able to get rid of it! I replaced the head gaskets 2 times. I had to have the transmission replaced, the rear brakes locked up when I was on vacation, the rear seat wore out, there was a knocking sound in the front end that took years to find, the AM band on the radio mysteriously didn't work, and the road + wind noise was absolutely appauling! Horrible horrible horrible car! Never had anything that bad!!!! The list goes on and on and on. Let me tell you that list goes on for $15,000! That's all the money I spent in repairs, and I couldn't get rid of it because my Dad wouldn't let me. Anyway, I got stuck with the Taurus 3 times! I don't know how people say they are good reliable cars. My brother had one and he had the same problems I had. His transmission blew when he was taking it home for the first time! I tell everyone who reads this... DO NOT BUY A FORD TAURUS! SAVE YOURSELF $15,000! There are PLENTY of other 4 door sedans out there and ones that look a lot nicer! Just to give you a comparison I had a 1989 Ford Thunderbird with 140,000 miles on it. I never got stuck, NO MAJOR REPAIRS! (Head gaskets, transmission etc...) One of the best cars I've owned. The Taurus had all of the repairs I described and the other $15,000 worth before 97,000 miles! And if you have a reliable Taurus then I'm happy for you. No sarcasm intended. I'm sorry to anyone who likes the Taurus for insulting it so much, but like I said mine was so unreliable, and the same with my brother's Taurus, so I'm only speaking of my own experiences.

I like them, but I fear the current generation is not very reliable. I keep hearing about break downs.

However, a lot are coming off of rental fleets right now. You can pick up a well equipped Taurus for 12k or so from them and often, still under the factory bumper to bumper warranty. Great value there.

The Taurus is decent car, as any car (even toyota) each one has good and bad points. The point I'd like to make is if you buy American you support America. If the transmission does go out in the Taurus it is cheaper to fix it than a toyota or nissan. toyota just settled an engine sludge lawsuit. They're no better than anyone else.Pick something you like and remember what they say about opinions.

If you are considering buying a Taurus then why don't you go ahead and just start walking everywhere. Fords are notorious for breaking down quickly (unless it's a diesel), and really aren't worth the money to fix them up again. Save yourself the trouble and buy a Chevy or Dodge

Sorry buddy there are many other cars where your money can be spent better. Try accords and camry's, maybe even hyundai sonata, if you really want to save money you cant go wrong with any of the japanese or korean brands for a reliable sedan

I enjoyed both of them that I owned.
The SHO version (1989) will long be my favorite. Loved it so much I couldn't sell it. So I gave it to a freind (he still owns it and only one car has ever beat it, a fully preped SHO)
In WV I didn't need a car that goes 140+ with out working hard.
