If so, is it because there are more material goods to be had, therefore more things to desire? Or, is this just a general trait of humans that has been going on since the beginning of time? Why do people care so much about material things/money when everyone knows that life is so short and "you can't take it with you."? Why do people value money over kindness and compassion? I don't get it. It seems like an illness.

I don't think there is more things, just more advertisement. We have commercials, billboards, and just plain more people walking around to make you envious. Not to mention the rise in technology with things like cell phones, computers, and any other thing that will make your life easier is also more tempting. So I think we are definitely more obsessed with making life easier and fitting in.
