People always say that to lose that last bit of excess fat, you should run a few miles and few times a week. But here's the thing- I can only run about 1/3 of a mile straight! I'm not overweight at all, just out of shape I guess ):

In school we had to do the mile, and it took me 11 minutes because I kept having to stop running and walk instead..

There's nothing magical about "running". Whether you cover 5 miles while you're running, or while you're walking briskly, you'll still burn calories. So don't worry. :)
A 5 mile brisk walk, 5 times per week, would make a great part of a weight-loss program. If you keep it up, you'll be able to increase your speed, and even change to a jogging stride.

If you can't jog or run for longer than 1/3 mile, you might also think about the arches of your feet, and whether your running shoes are giving you the correct support. Bad running shoes can lead to muscle/joint pain and convince you that you're weak.

OK, so you're out of shape. No biggie. Just do what you can every other day or so. If you keep at it, you will be able to run miles one of these days. (You think Oprah just woke up one day and ran a marathon? Noooo.) Just please don't overdo it, and if you're a woman, wear a really good sports bra. Running does take off weight fast, but it's also very hard on the body. There's nothing wrong with power walking instead of running.

Start by doing some brisk walking. Build up to the running. If you are still having a problem, see your doctor.

Be sure that you are not running as if you were in a track race. You should be running at more of a jogging pace.
