I had pom puppies this morning and the small one doesn't seem to be doing good. Can't tell if it is nursing have tried and tried to get it to latch. I have seperated the other puppies to give mom and runt some time alone. She is taking care of it and it is 16 hours old now. Does anyone know if it is alive because it has nursed or do they have to nurse right away. Any ideas on how to tell if it has nursed at all? I have given it some Karo syrup, it is not as strong as the others. If it is still weak in the morning I will take to the vet. I just need to know how to tell if it has nursed at all? I raise horses and I know that if a baby horse hadn't nursed by now it probably wouldn't be alive, are pups the same way?

Thanks for all the answers so quick!! Goat milk seems to be the answer at the moment but I can't get any..weird question do you know if horse milk would be ok? That I have access to right now. Mom seems to be taking care of pup on and off. Licking, cleaning, etc but at times place it behind her.

If the pup is OK, it will try to suck hard on your finger (really, almost anything). If it doesn't, there may be a problem but I really doubt a vet could help other then to show you how to tube feed without drowning him. If left alone, the mother will eventually crush him as the mothers expect the puppies to move and the weaker ones cannot. As far as I know, there is no way to tell if he has nursed unless you saw him sucking away. The initial feedings are important for disease defenses as well as nutrition so this pup may not have received the mother's disease defenses but there's nothing you can do as he is too young for the shots.

I hope he does fine - losing a puppy is never easy and the average mortality is about 30% depending on the mother's health and diet. Free feed her (the mommy) puppy food - it takes a lot of energy to make enough milk for a litter. Also, weigh the pups daily - healthy pups will gain weight quickly and you can see if one is falling behind the others and may need help quickly.

Maternalac supplementation is also an option-probably the best option. Get it from your vet. They do sell canned goat's milk at the grocery store, but the smell is horrific. If you can get fresh goat's milk in your area, it will work wonderfully. We have raised many puppies on goat's milk. I don't know anything about horse milk.
If it's tummy is swollen it has nursed. All you can do is keep giving it some extra food and keep it alone on mom once in a while. Sometimes runts just die no matter how well you care for them.

Unfortunately it will be like a foal. Sometimes some just don't make it. It was probably born w/ "issues" I am soo sorry. Sounds like you have done everything you can.
Now, if she is a little cool, she can not digest the milk, so keeping her warm is a must. A heating pad, & fluids are important.... can inject some iv fluids sub q. (no gulcose in newborns, so make sure not to use iv's w/ glucose) After she gets warmed up try her on a teat, if she still won't suck... just go to bed knowing you done everything possiable. Nature takes care of itself.
You can mix 1/2 water and 1/2 Carnation evapered milk and 1 egg yoke together to make milk replacer. I have raised puppies on this and it is good.
Sorry.
Best of luck!

How is the mom treating the pup? Is she licking it and allowing it to be close, or does she keep moving it to the side? Don't touch the pup yet, but just observe the mother with the little one. Also, don't keep the others away from her for too long either so they don't go hungry

I strongly suggest that you look up the goats milk puppy milk replacement receipe. I used it to supplement a litter of 12 just to make sure everyone picked up weight well . It worked great for me. I can look it if you cant find it :) Good luck and I'll be praying for that little one!

You are correct...It is vital for any baby to as soon as possible to feed. He has obviously fed or else he wouldn't be there. if they don't feed within three to five hours there is about a 90% chance they won't make it so congratulations he should be able to make it just make sure to get to the vet to make sure he doesn't need anything special.

you can also get mothers milk at pet stores, like Petco and PetSmart...if the babies gums aren't pink, she's not breathing, then maybe she's gone...but if she's breathing get something into her...you can buy goats milk at some grocery stores. (make sure it's warm but not hot.) and keep the baby warm, extra warm.

Yes and if you wake up and it is gone the mother ate it. The eat the weak puppies in the wild that way if they die they wont attract predators .
