I'm a cabbie, we do appreciate tips but I don't insist on it, and I don't think anything bad of people that don't.
Usually people just round up the fare $19.50 make it 20.
The way I see some of my colleagues driving I definitely wouldn't tip them.

depends on the driver and ride. Some cabs will go the longest route for a higher fare and others will try to get you there as fast as possible. Another factor is if they charge you for additional riders since some don't so they get a bigger tip.
The tip also come from their attitude as last christmas my and a friend had done some holiday shopping and caught a cab back to work because we had too many bags to carry. Experienced riders, we were prepared to tip him really good since the ride was only 1 1/2 miles(we walked to the mall), but since his crappy attitude was sucky to be around and he griped about how he was going to have to be back on the bottom on the pick up list we just got sick of it. The man couldn't stop griping. So we didn't tip him.
Usually 3-5 bucks is good, if it's an exceptional ride

Not in Australia but speaking as a taxi driver tips are greatly appreciated. New/inexperienced drivers often earn as little as A$4 per hour.
10% is the customary amount but many passengers simply round the fare up to the nearest whole number. I was always grateful no matter what the amount!

Surely you can tip the driver as long as he gave you a great service. Moreover it depends on you on how much you should tip. You are generous.

Yes, you would tip the usual 15-20% based on your discretion.

I'm not sure the exact numbers, but I always do the 10-20% as if they were some form of restaurant, but instead of sitting and dining, you get sitting and... riding.
