I'm 17 and i want to join the military mainly for the benefits afterward but for many other reasons too. I am gonna go to college and do ROTC there but I'm not sure which brance to go into. I want the smallest chance of being in combat but I don't want to be in the coast guard.

Well.....there IS a war going on..........
Either Navy or USAF. Try learning a skill that you can use when you get out; engineering might be a good area to investigate.

It's not a secret that our Army & Marines are having a rough time in Iraq right now. Expect to see combat if you enlist now -- they're even calling up people in their 40's!!

And, as a few other people here pointed out -- it's not all as the recruiters promise, and yes, it is a binding contract. Read the fine print, and consider carefully.

If you're looking for benefits from my experience I would choose the Army, you have the oppertunity to choose your job so you can pick one like Admin where even if you do get deployed chances are you will still be behind a desk with a computer. The Army offers 100% tution assistance while on active duty and the EArmyU program also pays for books so that your education is 100% free. If you have student loans they will often pay them off as well. The Army also offers some of the most competetive bonuses for enlistment compared to the other services depending on what job you choose when you enlist. you can also take a quick look at the Army pay chart and see what the pay would look like by going to this site (http://www.dfas.mil/militarypay/2006militarypaytables/2007_Web_Pay_Table.pdf) I joined when I was 17 also, I've been deployed and I'm not going to sugar coat it sometimes military life can suck, but then again when I'm 37 and retired I'm sure it won't look near as bad. Joining was one of the best things I could have done, but then again Military life is not for everyone it's not just a job it's a lifestyle and you have to be willing to give up somethings and get used to changes. Hope this helps.

Without a doubt Air Force. They usually dont go into combat unless necessary. Its just like having a really structured 8 hour job. They dont have to do all the B.S most of the other branches do. They allow you more time to pursue school as a work day. But they take a lot of test in order to advance. To be competitive as an officer maintain at least a 3.3gpa. And their recruiters dont lie to you to get you to join. I just talked to a recruiter today. I want to join but as an officer because I have a degree. I wouldnt consider anything else. The basic training isnt that bad either. But if you book smart you will definately advance in the Air Force than others. Talk to a recruiter they arent aggressive. They are real.

I don't believe the military is for you. I joined the marines when i was 18, that was the biggest mistake of my life...right next to quitting Marine Corps boot camp...lol. I think your plan is great though. It means you will be joining when you are around 22...you will be much better able to handle the rigor of boot camp. If i were to choose one, i would go with the Air Force. Marines and Army are mostly grunts that just get sent out to do the dirty work, i.e. infantry combat. If i were to give you advice, it would be to finish college, find a career and never look back at the time you wanted to join the military. I still long for the honor of being a marine though. My brother was recently deployed to Iraq, and i hope that if you do join, you do not ever get deployed to combat. It really tears your heart apart to drop off a loved one...not being sure if you will ever see them again. All you can do is give them a big long hug, give them a few words of encouragement, and not look back because it is just too damned hard.

each and all the branches have an identical pay and same advantages. Deployments final six months or extra in each branch apart from the army which has 12 month deployments. The military has the main deployments. each sailor on sea duty gets deployed to sea for no less than six months or extra. it is not appropriate which branch you connect there is often the prospect you would be stationed foreign places. while you're stationed in Korea you should be there for years and the protection rigidity won't pay on your loved ones to come returned. in the experience that your loved ones is so significant you should no longer undergo to be without them fore extra beneficial than 2 months do no longer connect the protection rigidity. it isn't the life for you. ETA: somebody reported the Coast look after above. The Coast look after cutters circulate to sea for 4 or extra months at a time. yet even Coast Guardsmen are at the instant be reported as as much as the army to serve in Iraq. military deployments are six months or extra.

Air force or coast guard. Airforce has the lowest death rate of any major service with 31 and the Navy 64.

The Coast Guard has had 1.

Army 1,417 and the Marines 934.

hmmm, don't join the military if your scared to die for your country.

Seriously, I'm not joking.

There are a lot of jobs that are not combat oriented, but the military can turn many of those people into GI's if needed.

The Navy has the best chance of not being in combat, provided you don't go subs, because they brush with the Soviets quite frequently. Of course, now that Bush is pissing off the Russians now too, all bets are off, because they could sink our carriers in the Gulf in a heart beat if they wanted.

Definitely the Air Force. They treat you like a human being. I was enlisted for six years. They have the best facilities. Make sure you get into a technical field and get training. As far as combat, everything is in support of the flying mission. Much less chance of combat in the Air Force.

I'm in the Coast Guard for 19 years and I love it.

You have to choose the service thats right for you and what you want to do while your serving. Go to all the service sites and do research before you decide. I picked the CG because I love the water and this is the best service for women out of all 5.

if you are "fresh" ur definitely going to combat, also not all the benefits are promised the recruiters can lie to you and its legal reach the contract carefully.

also from what ive seen if u arnt done with ur duty in Iraq and you come back in a wheelchair YOU have to pay the army.

btw if i wanted the least chance of dying i would go to the Air Force or Navy
