ok, my mom takes it. It was in the news yesterday and today. My mom is asking me if she should stop taking it. I told her not without the doctor's approval, but what is going on? I am worried. We have next month's appointment with the doctor and there is no way to reschedule it. What am I suppose to do?

Avandamet is a combination drug of Avandia and metformin. A recent study showed that Avandia has been linked to a 40% increased risk of heart attack in people who take it.

You shouldn't stop taking any medication without speaking with your doctor. Maybe you can speak to him/her prior to her visit.

Good answer by Bamberlero.

Call the Doctor's office, tell them why you are worried, and ask that the doctor or a nurse call you back with an answer when they have the time.

Meanwhile, don't stop the medication.

Doctors are still arguing about what the results of this study mean.

Call the pharmacist. They should know a lot about it. If they recommend she stop it, call the doctor's receptionist and have them relay the information to the doctor for their suggestion of what to do while waiting for her appointment next month.
