According to the Bible it is.

Assuming you don't accept the bible as historical fact, what would be the motivations or the benefit for the early Hebrews to condemn masturbation?

Before we get to that, lets identify some other aspects of early Hebrew thought regarding sex.

Homosexuality is wrong.
Multiple wives is fine.
Contraception is to be avoided.

The connection with those three and masturbation is that following the "law" of the times should theoretically mean more procreation.

It's certainly no secret that the bible is high on procreation. There was that whole "go forth and multiply" thing in the very first chapter. But why?

Lets forget for a moment that the Bible is the greatest selling book of all time and remember who all these laws were for? What was the context? The early Hebrews were a small tribe who faced considerable opposition from powerful neighbours, internal strife, disease, drought, etc. The only way they had a fighting chance was to breed and breed often.

Anything that could have been an obstacle for a rapid and efficient breeding program was declared to be against God.

Thankfully, natural selection makes us aware that the tools of survival are not necessarily moral. In other words, just because something works, that doesn't make it right. That's something Christians of today should come realize. What worked well for the early Hebrews, may not work for the Christians of today.

A youth asked: “Is masturbation an unforgivable sin?” Masturbation is not mentioned at all in the Bible. The practice was common in the Greek-speaking world during Bible times, and several Greek words were used to describe the practice. But not one of these words is used in the Bible.

Since masturbation is not directly condemned in the Bible, does this mean it is harmless? Absolutely not! Though it is not classed with such gross sins as fornication, masturbation is surely an unclean habit.

Even those not especially concerned with God’s viewpoint feel uneasy about the practice. For instance, Dr. Aaron Hass in his survey of the sexual practices of 625 teenagers reported: “The majority of adolescents who masturbated reported feeling guilty, ashamed, dirty, stupid, embarrassed, or abnormal.” Surely, masturbation is an unclean habit. But since “uncleanness,” according to the Bible, is a term that allows for a wide range of degree of seriousness, masturbation is not to be classed with such serious sins as fornication or other types of gross sexual immorality. Ephesians 4:19.

The Scriptures counsel: “Deaden, therefore, your body members that are upon the earth as respects fornication, uncleanness, sexual appetite, hurtful desire, and covetousness.” (Colossians 3:5) Is one who practices masturbation ‘deadening his body members as respects sexual appetite’? On the contrary, he is stimulating the sexual appetite. The Bible urges that one avoid the thinking and conduct that lead to such problems, replacing them with wholesome activity, and that one cultivate self-control. When earnest effort is put forth to do this, such self-abuse can be avoided, with benefits mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

Masturbation also instills certain attitudes that are mentally corrupting. (Compare 2 Corinthians 11:3.) When masturbating, a person is immersed in his or her own bodily sensations, totally self-centered. Sex becomes separated from love and is relegated to a reflex that releases tension. But God intended that sexual desires be satisfied in sexual relations, an expression of love between a man and his wife. .

Anything that gives one sexual pleasure is a sin in Christianity. They are really obsessed with other people's sex lives, for some reason, and make all sorts of declarations against any kind of sexual behavior that isn't strictly between a married man and woman, and even then, only for procreation.

The only reference to masturbation in the bible had nothing to do with random masturbation. It seems Onan did not want to leave any children with his brothers name. Probably hated his brother as his brother was wicked enough for the Lord to kill him. Seems it aggravated the Lord that Onan would not obey Judah his father so the Lord killed him too not for masturbation but for disobedience.

Adultery is defined in the Bible as any kind of sex that is not with your married spouse. Sex with self (to include sexual fantasies played out in your head, see where Jesus said, if you even look at another woman with lust in your heart...) falls outside of that guideline. Therefore it is adultery.

The law is here to point out to us that we are incapable of doing it on our own. Everyone has sinned, everyone has made mistakes, and no one is good enough to get into Heaven by your own deeds. That's why we needed Jesus to take the punishment for us, so that we might be reconciled to God in Heaven.

Yes I believe that it is. The bible tells us to deny ourselves, and not give in to fleshly lusts. Doing this is catering to our flesh, not denying it. And I'm not saying it's easy, either. I'm just answering your question honestly.

It's something very different than the sexual intimacy God designed for marriage. That is for the bonding of a man and wife; it isn't just fantasizing for one's own personal pleasure.

Is this a real question? How could it possibly be a sin, assuming there is such a thing as sin.

as a catholic i know it is a mortal sin to masterbaute becasue it is a form of lust and also sperm is considered a part of a life and if you masterbaute its considered a waste of life. also going back to the lust part, it leads to thoughts of lust and desire and it should be for a married couple only willing to use the act of sex as a way of producing life.

Yes. "But I say to you that every one who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart." (Mt.5:27)
