Newark just has a bad rap, but in fact is a great city. Downtown, besides being the heart of the city has the NJ Performing Arts Center, Newark Symphony Hall and the Newark Museum for the arts fan. Sports fans can take in Minor League Baseball with the Newark Bears, at Riverfront Stadium. In September, the NJ Devils will move into their new home, the Prudential Center also in Downtown. Evenings, there is nothing better than heading over to Ferry Street for some Portuguese Cuisine (and nightlife) in the Ironbound section of the city. The Ironbound is alos great to live in if you want to live in the city itself. Crime is low in the Ironbound, University Heights and Downtown though the western parts of the city are still rough around the edges

If your looking for something more suburban, then try Summit, Morristown, Cranford, Westfield, Madison, Montclair, South Orange, Maplewood Boonton or Berkeley Heights. All of thse towns have thriving downtowns and are located within 25 miles of Newark on the train lines that go there.

In reality, with few exceptions any Town on the Boonton Line, Morristown Line, Raritan Valley Line or Gladstone Line (NJ Transit Commuter Rail lines) are decent places to live, so I'd start there. All these lines have direct service to Downtown Newark at either Broad Street Station or Penn Station, where the Newark City Subway/Light Rail connects the stations to the rest of Downtown. Check the map below for rough distances, etc.

The Newark airport is verrryyy busy so watch out. Also Newark is a very Urban city with a lot of crime. I would suggest moving the next town or a few towns a way.. like 10-15 minutes away from there. Try Monclair. It is a very classy suburb with very classy women. Or Bloomfeild that is also close to Newark, but with less crime and nicer neighborhoods.. and it is very close to the city so on weekends you can go to the clubs in NYC at night time. The transportation is very good with buses.
