When i went to gpedit, i followed what most likely done in dealing with this:
1)Start the Group Policy Editor by clicking on Start, Run and typing gpedit.msc in the Run box and pressing Enter
2) In the left hand column, click on Computer Configuration, Administrative Templates, System, System Restore..... but there was no System Restore there!!!!!

If this happened to me, I would first run any and all antivirus and antispyware programs available to me - in Safe Mode.

Then, I would go for a Windows Repair.

I had the same problem a few years ago. I finally had to take it to a "Geek Squad" at my local Best Buy store to get it fixed.
