i have no experience with blank rounds but i'd like to purchase some just for the sake of doing so. my question is this: will a blank cartridge cause the slide of a semi-automatic pistol to recoil and set up for the next shot or does the cartridge only fire to were i will have to eject and reload manually?

Blank firing semi autos either have a block on the end of the barrel or a built in baffle in the barrel. The slide works when the expanding gas can push against something.

Blanks will typically not cycle a semi auto.

You could change the springs to very light ones, but then shooting live ammo may damage things, as the action would slam back pretty hard, so I don't recommend doing this unless it's going to be exclusively for blanks.

You could install a cut down spring for blank shooting only; just be sure to change back to the regular one before shooting any live ammo. I would suggest that you go to WESTERN STAGE PROPS and buy one of their full size duplicate 8mm blank firing only type pistols and some ammo. That way there is no danger whatsoever of firing real ammo by accident or anything. They are reasonably priced and reliable; I appear in re-enactments and we use a lot of props and stuff from WESTERN.

Blanks will generally not cycle the action unless you have something attached to the muzzle to hold the pressure in. The Army does that to make practice with an M60 machinegun realistic while using blanks, but I don't know of anything to use with pistols.

Blanks will not usually completely cycle in a semi-automatic pistol. Best you can hope for is that it will expel the expended blank cartridge.

They will perform in the same manner as a cartridge with a shell, beware that blanks can still be dangerous, people have been killed by the "wad" in blanks. About 10-15 years ago, a up and coming actor, goofing around shot his self in the head with a blank, it killed him.
