Geographic tongue is called such since the tongue often looks like a changing picture that looks like a map. It is present in about 5% of the population and involves the loss and regrowth of papillae (the normal shaggy projections of the tongue). It can be present in children or adults and may be present for a lifetime. It rarely produces symptoms and if so, it can have a burning sensation with hot or highly seasoned foods. Treatment for this is not necessary, and honestly I find it interesting when I see a patient with it.
Hope this helps!
