Practice does not just mean the sense of "practice makes perfect", where it implies that you are performing an activity imperfectly.

A practice is a habit, a set routine that you follow throughout your day, week, or year. So a doctor's practice is not frightening at all. It does not mean that it is something they are amateurs at or completely inexperienced. It means that doctoring is a habit they continually enact. That should be reassuring if anything, because we know this is something they do all the time.
