I am going to start lifting and doing my work outs at night. I should eat a small meal 40 minutes before I hear, and protein oriented directly afterward, correct?

I would eat a medium-large meal about 1 hr or more before you work out. After working out take a protein shake if u do those and have something wiht HIGH SUGAR. Eating a sugar food directly after an intense workout stimulates muscle recovery

yes, thats wright. small meal before should consist of complex carbs which give you energy. protein after working out because it repairs muscle.
