I think I should answer because we seem to look alike.
I love eating in Chicago. Alan Richman declaired Chicago the #1 eating city in the U.S dethroning NYCity. I am in graduate school near there and still discovering places. Some top pics-

If you have a good job and love food. Charlie trotter's is world famious among foodies and chef's alike. Here you are looking at jacket and tie kind of crowd. 4 month resurvations. 816 West Armitage. Just...throwin...that....out there......for...ya....I still can't afford it. :( BUT YOU MIGHT! Go for me if you can.

Go to rick Bayless's place called Frontera grill. ALWAYS packed. He was the first man to bring top shelf latin food to the great white north. Also, one of America's fogoten top chefs. Do yourself a favor and go for lunch and you get the same food, less wait time and cheaper. It's on Clark St.

Around the corner is Joe's Bistro. I don't know the reputation here but I have never had a bad meal. It's French Bistro food and the snails and fresh mini loafs of bread are worth the trip. This is not going to break the bank but it isn't cheep eats by any means.

Frankly I could go on and on. You might want to narrow it down to a region next time.

OHH!! I almost forgot. The bespoke chicago style hot dog. I have yet to make it but I am dying to go. Hotdougs. In chicago. You have to go on a Fri or Saturday because (as I understand it) that is when you can get the handcut french fries served in duck fat. You have to ask for them special on those days because it isn't on the menu. Should be cheap. 3324 North California.

Good luck mate.

Ok, you need a car to get to some of those places mentioned in the answers. If you go have a car, I would go to Superdawgs (for hotdogs) or Maxwell Street, these are like two most famous places for hotdogs, and they are good. No car: Singha, it's a Thai restaurant on Clark in the loop. It's super cheap like $5/$6, but absolutely amazing food, it's packed at lunchtime. And they have your food out in 5 minutes. For BBQ, there is a stand on the corner of Wacker and State called Robinson's, try the ribs or pulled pork. For Italian Beef, there's a place called Luke's on Jackson and Wells, it's amazing, everyone loves the beef here. Ok and then lastly, there's a place called Burrito Buggy, it's on Van Buren and Wells. They have a Gyro Burrito that is absolutely amazing and huge, you will not have room for anything else. Hopes this helps and enjoy your trip to Chicago!!

I agree with Eric E. Jonathon is a moron.

Hot Doug's is the last place to go if you want a Chicago Style Hot Dog. You should go there if you want a "novelty sausage" like Duck Sausage or Chicken Sausage. If you want a real Chicago Style Hot Dog you can do alot better.

Lou Malnattis
Pizzeria Uno/Due
Ed Debevicks
There's a German place downtown, the name totally escapes me since it's been a while, but it's supposed to be the oldest restaurant in the city. It is famous, and I can't think of the name right now! It's great authentic German food with beer samplers and such.

Lou Mitchell's near Union Station. You can see all the big wigs eat there because the breakfast is sooooo good.

The Rock n Roll McDonalds
Ed Debevick's where the waitresses insult you.
Greektown!
Chinatown--Joy Yee Noodle is the best.
Willow Room in what used to be Marshall Fields--now Macy's.

Personally I like to think lou malnatis is a fantastic and popular pizza joint. As far as older and more established you Must go to sabatinos for a kings treatment and fantastic food, the people there will take care of you and you really get a cozy feel there, there are even some older gents that walk around some evenings to serenade folks. great place.

Jonathon,

What school are you attending for your graduate program?
I would like to know because I do not want to go there. I cannot believe you are in graduate school and you cannot spell "reservation or forgotten." What is this world coming to?
Do they just accept anyone into graduate school these days?
