It's always safer to back up, but I believe there is an option to just upgrade from XP, which would keep all your files.

Yes, Backup all the files you need and want to migrate to Vista. Forget those that are telling you to stay with XP, XP is OLD and tried (7 Years Old) for an OS thats an antique. Vista has 10 times the support now that XP had when it was released, and more than it has now. It's easy to back up your files on a DVD or and External Hard Drive and then Migrate them back to your Laptop after you Install Vista. You will love it. And there are a lot of goodies included with Vista just for Laptops. Besides, you've already purchased Vista in advance.

Not necessarily. Probably the only things that you can lose are programs.
If you have a decently large hard drive (100-750 GB), you can setup a partition. Basically, a partition is another operating system (XP, Vista, Windows 2000, etc.). By using two partitions, you can keep XP and have Vista at the same time.
Info on partitions.

If you don't want to make a partition and want to upgrade directly, then yes you should backup your files. The only thing you can't backup are programs (most of them, at least) and the system registry.

DONT!!
Wait a while before you do the upgrade. Vista has real issues. Read the link below. It is deep but Vista is crap and XP is supported until 2010. I build PCs and answer a lot of questions here and in life about this. I have reloaded XP on PCs that came with Vista because of the issues.

you may installation Vista and "twin boot" with XP. in spite of the easy actuality that, in case you pick to augment XP - do now no longer purchase an advance disk and installation it over XP. continuously come to a determination for the completed version. the reason being is that any corruption you have on the instant have on your OS will greater advantageous suited than probably carry over into your new OS. advancements are never cautioned. continuously format and reinstall from scratch. You should backup your files, regardless of whether you install Vista or not. But YES you'd better back them up before the Vista install. It might go smoothly, but might not.
