So glad you found it! Ellis Island got lots of press, but Castle Clinton was the real landing point for the first 60 years or more in New York City. If you want to see the records, go to http://www.castlegarden.org

The other misperception is that everyone immigrating after 1892 went through Ellis Island. But it wasn't true of those traveling first or second class. Those passengers got off the boat first at a different location and were treated very nicely...no cattle pen. They got off at the piers where the American citizens and simple European tourists also got off. There was a nice office for them and they were treated much differently.

The Port of New York isn't referring to "the whole thing". It refers to the Port Authority on the lower east side of Manhattan. Ellis Island was a federal immigration facility. The Port of New York was a state-owned and operated facility.

Happy hunting! Let us know if you need more information on anyone. We're always glad to help.

Depends on when the person arrived in New York. Ellis Island records date from 1892. Before this, from about 1851 I believe, people came through Castle Garden - see castlegarden.org for what records are on line.

Also Ancestry has records up to 1957 for NYC arrivals by ship. I reckon since we are talking about your faher that these records might be relevant - as opposed to Castle Garden!

'Port of New York' would refer to the whole place, geographically speaking. Ellis Island or Castle garden would have been the processing place - different than the port - a part of the port, in fact.

I don't know how or why people get so hung up on Ellis Island. Ellis Island didn't even exist until 1892. Plus, even while Ellis Island was operational, there were something like 30 other ports operational on the east coast.

Go the public library and ask one of the geneologists to help you find the Ellis Island records.
