Anything that takes your attention off of God, comes between you and communion with God. You cannot think about something else when you are truly focused on God in prayer or meditation. Obviously one way to get your mind off of yourself and problems is by turning to God and Meditating on God. This may be why the bible says to pray unceasingly.
Today's world is so filled with distractions that entice us to think on those things that will give us pleasure and fulfill our feelings and desires. These are only temporary where the Love of God is eternal. Certainly anything negative like anger and chaos tear us down , while God's Love and the beauty of his creations build us up spiritually.
We all have a spark of God's spirit within us and the only thing that keeps us from God realization is ourselves.

These are all aspects of the same thing.
We chose to separation. We have an identity based on good and evil. We have a "self-esteem", an ego, all based on being better or worse than others. We are "good", or "bad".
The story of the Garden of Eden is an excellent parable of just this condition. It has nothing to do with sex or disobeying God. In Aramaic, "to eat of" is an idiom meaning "to partake of" or "to make part of oneself".
In Aramaic, the tree is a symbol of knowledge.
The Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil is what Adam and Eve were warned against. In other words, they chose to think of things in those terms, and Adam thereafter lied to God, got angry, fearful, shamed, etc.
I am not a Christian, and have experienced God directly. If you wish to discuss your search further, I'd be happy to help (I have no group, don't belong to one, don't have a book, no mission, no message, happily married with a BABY DAUGHTER! YEA!)
Enjoy the search. There is such happiness and love possible.

--WHEN INDIVIDUALS attribute god-like qualities to humans who are all equal in most important things, THEN God becomes unimportant.
--FOR INSTANCE, making hero's out of sports , entertainment etc. individuals and building imagination of their so-called "SUPER POWERS" beyond anything reasonable is fantasy that backfires!
--Good-luck also has displaced God in every land on the earth in the gambling houses, churches, lotteries & everywhere people wish to exercise a measure of greed more or less, as this text shows what happened to the Israelites:
(Isaiah 65:11-12) “11Â “But YOU men are those leaving Jehovah, those forgetting my holy mountain, those setting in order a table for the god of Good Luck and those filling up mixed wine for the god of Destiny"

What is with this obsession with becoming close to an outside creator god? Such a thing doesn't exist. If there is anything you could call a god, I don’t think that entity is separate from any of us. Whether we would be aware of it or not. So I’m saying, you couldn’t possible be separate from “god”.

I think for me, personally, the single biggest thing that keeps me from god-realization is the lack of evidence to support his existence.

We are just too busy living our day to day lives. We don't take the time to spend a few moments with God. We are used to quick answers and with God things take time.

Probably the same sort of thinking that leads us to neglect our sacrifices to Athena and Thor.
